MAY MD of the MONTH
Margaret Jokoh,
WLOY

How did you first hear about WLOY?

Honestly, I first heard of it when I was looking for work-study jobs on campus, haha honest, but true. But now I love it for its diverse staff (my fam bam) and that you can be whatever major you want and still work there… I happen to be Biopsychology

How long have you been at WLOY? What is your history there?

I have been a staff member for four years and a DJ for about three years. I have worked many positions at WLOY (even a position they gave me because they had no where else to put me haha… I was below a music librarian if you can even get any lower). But now I work as the Head Music Director and Program Director! (mama I’ve made it!)

What are you most proud of accomplishing/changing at WLOY since you became MD?

I think just making our music department more integrated with the rest of the departments/staff rather than being a whole separate entity, I love my music chickadees so much. Also, just getting more interviews and show/press has been very exciting for me, it let’s people know how cool we are and it showcases not only our station but the impact of college radio.

How does WLOY make itself known throughout Baltimore? What sort of things do you do to connect with the community?

One thing I love the most about the station is that we are heavily involved with the local music scene but also in service. We hold our own stage at Honfest (a local music festival in Hampden), play music at several events on campus and the coolest thing we do is bring in local artist to do concerts once a week on campus! But the one thing I love the most that we do, is aid in this BBQ for the homeless. Different people from the staff come to play music, help BBQ and just hang out and talk to people, it’s really cool and makes you appreciate what you have.

What do you love most/dislike most about Baltimore?

Love – quirky, cute and artsy
Dislike – Disparity in income / income inequality among residents

Who are your all-time Top 5 favorite artists/bands?

Ok this is really hard and I hate having to be put up to do this haha. But in no particular order: Don Broco, One Ok Rock, Third Story, Goldlink and Snarky Puppy (very weird group but spans a lot of genres)

What artist/band have you heard for the first time this year that has impressed you the most?

Don Broco, they are doing something extremely different and are always changing but I think they are finally coming into their own sound and it’s definitely innovative… in my opinion.

What still-to-come 2017 album release are you most looking forward to?

Haim, I have waited so long like I know it cannot be a continuation or the same style as Days are gone. I actually am writing this as they [Haim] have just released new music so I am stoked to listen to this after class haha (yea I’m in class) Also, Doll Skin, I excited to see what their sound has evolved into. Omg and the Gorrilaz!

What’s the one thing you can’t do without?

My earphones

What’s the best gift anyone has ever given you?

I actually do not know, I just like getting gifts in general haha

What is your favorite food or meal?

Lasagna

What is your favorite TV show from when you were a kid?

Wow, I watched so much tv as a kid… umm let’s go with a tie between Dragon Tales and Arthur

Lightning Round:
Dog or Cat? both
Coke or Pepsi? both
Morning Person or Night Owl? Both… somehow
City or Country? Country
Watch TV or Read A Book? TV
Mountain or Beach? Beach… I almost fell off a mountain three times in Cape Town… each would have almost would have ended my life lol
Dine or Delivery? Dine
Hipster or Nerd? Nerd… most definitely
Beard or Clean Shaven?
 both
Pants or Shorts? Pants

Do you find it better to keep up on current political events or do you prefer to tune it all out and pretend it’s not happening?

Keep up with it… I use to not even care because I was that person that said “oh I am only one person, I don’t matter” but that’s far from the truth… before I get on my soapbox, I just think it’s important to be somewhat knowledge, don’t be willfully ignorant.

And finally, and most importantly, is there such a thing as too much frosting on a cake?

I want to say no, but my body is saying yes.
