Your NACC Chart Recap is here.
Folk Chart Launching Next Week! We’re thrilled to announce that we’re launching our newest genre chart in beta this Friday! If you are at a station that would like to report a Folk Top 10 to NACC (and you didn’t already sign up via our website), please reach out to us HERE and let us know. You won’t be able to report to this chart without doing that.
The battle for the NACC 200 crown is as hot as ever and it’s resulted in something we’ve not had happen on the chart before. After relinquishing the top spot to Waxahatchee last week, Broken Social Scene have returned to #1 this week. BSS member and Metric lead singer Emily Haines recently talked to Exclaim regarding the band playing in Manchester just 24 hours after the terror attack there in May and about her reluctance to open the band’s set with “Anthems For A Seventeen Year-Old Girl” until Manchester native and Smith’s guitarist Johnny Marr agreed to appear on stage with them. The Arts & Crafts release has now spent two weeks at #1 and will now be working to fend off challenges from Toro y Moi and Arcade Fire (the latter of which rises to #1 on both the NACC Next and Non-Comm Charts this week).
Speaking of Manchester, only one new album cracks the Top 10 this week, and it comes from Manchester Orchestra, who, ironically, is not from Manchester nor are they an orchestra. Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia the quartet have just released their fifth album, A Black Mile To The Surface (out on Loma Vista) and it climbs from 17-7 this week.
As tipped here last week, The Districts have scored that lofty debut we expected them to. They, in fact, land the top debut on the NACC 200 this week at #26. The band teamed up with Grammy-winning producer John Congleton (who has worked with St. Vincent, War On Drugs, & Cloud Nothings, among many others) on their 2015 sophomore LP A Flourish And A Spoil. Congleton produced four songs here on their new album, but The DIstricts have shown their continued growth as a band and took on the challenge of producing the rest of the album themselves.
Enjoying the healthiest jump on the NACC 200 this week is one-man project Mappe Of. A Northern Star, A Perfect Stone (released by Toronto-based Paper Bag Records), is the debut release by Ontario’s Tom Meikle, who is also a member of the art-rock five-piece Common Age. Meikle attended journalism school and busked around Australia before settling on a career in music. His sound, far removed from Common Age’s, has been called by some as Bon Iver-meets-Fleet Foxes. Whatever the attempt at categorization, Mappe Of enjoys the chart’s biggest climb this week, up 181-68.
Finally, we have this week’s top add-getter. It marks the return of Rainer Maria. The Madison, WI-based trio formed in 1995 and released five LPs along with a number of EPs before breaking up in 2006. A reunion show took place on New Year’s Eve in 2014 and several more shows have happened over subsequent years. Those shows let to new music and now, 11 years after the release of their last record, Rainer Maria join the list of other long-absent bands (including Ride, The Jesus And Mary Chain & Grandaddy) that have made 2017 their comeback year.
