It only took three weeks for St. Vincent to reach #1 on the NACC 200. She completes her journey to the top by ascending 2-1 this week. Since we’ve now prominently been featuring a pink butt in our chart recap for three weeks, it’s fair to say news has broken regarding whom it actually belongs to. Although she had earlier said in an interview with Vogue that she’d never disclose whose butt it is, St. Vincent has let the cat out of the bag. Gracing the cover is model Carlotta Kohl. With all that’s going on in the world today, aren’t you glad you now know that? St. Vincent’s “Fear The Future” tour kicks off it’s US leg November 14th in Detroit (and with 12 additional dates just added, will now run through March 2018).
Leaping 16-7 this week, and enjoying the biggest climb into the Top 10, is British singer/rapper Archy Ivan Marshall aka King Krule. The Ooz is his second LP under the King Krule moniker following 2013’s 6 Feet Beneath The Moon which was nominated for the BBC’s Sound of 2013 award (though he did release an album, A New Place 2 Drown, under his own name in 2015). Joining King Krule in the Top 10 this week are Destroyer (11-9) and Kelela (12-10).
As we thought might be the case this week, our biggest NACC 200 climb comes from last week’s top add-getter Daniele Luppi & Parquet Courts. But who knew it would be so close? The collaboration from the Italian composer and New York band that we profiled here last week, leapt 162 spots (from 195-33) on the chart this week, but we have to also mention Julien Baker, who raced 161 spots (from 187-26). Her Matador Records debut, and second solo release away from her band Forrister, certainly gave Luppi and Parquet Courts a run for their money.
The NACC 200’s highest debut this week comes from Curtis Harding. Harding got his start singing backup, both in the studio and on tour, for Cee Lo Green. After meeting and hitting it off with Black Lips guitarist Cole Alexander the two formed Night Sun and released a single on Burger Records. The label ended up putting out Harding’s debut release Soul Power in 2014. Now signed to Anti-, Harding’s sophomore release, Face Your Fear, is the top debut of the week at #39.
Bittersweet news with regard to this week’s top add. It comes from the late, great Sharon Jones and her band The Dap-Kings. Jones didn’t release her first album until she was 40. A gospel singer in church and a session backing-vocalist, Jones worked as a correction’s officer at Riker’s Island and armored car guard for Wells Fargo, among other things. It wasn’t until a session backing deep funk legend Lee Fields that Jones was ‘discovered.’ For the next 20 years, Jones & the Dap-Kings made a name for themselves as what many called America’s best live act. Jones overcame cancer in 2013, but it returned in 2015. She recorded seven albums, including a holiday album in 2015. Her final release, Soul Of A Woman, was recorded while she was deep into her battle with pancreatic cancer. Jones passed away on November 18th of last year. But she’s left behind an amazing catalog of music and an indelible memory of an amazing and powerful singer for anyone who was fortunate enough to see her perform.
