What a way to end the year. St. Vincent fends off all comers and does what no one else has done this year: She rules the NACC 200 for an unprecedented sixth week! Alvvays had just broken the record themselves in October when they reached five weeks on top. Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings look to be giving up their run for #1, dipping 2-3 this week with Fever Ray rising 3-2 and lining herself up for our possible first #1 of 2018.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have been all over the NACC Charts this year releasing their 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th LPs between February and November. And word is they are not done yet. A fifth album is expected before the year ends. The Australian band’s 12th release, Polygondwanaland, is the biggest climber into the Top 10 this week, rising 14-7, and improves on the #49-peak of their previous effort, Sketches Of Brunswick East. It also becomes their third NACC Top 10 album this year. Also joining King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard in the Top 10 is Sufjan Stevens, rising 11-9.
Soaring onto the NACC 200 this week at #19 is last week’s #1 Add. Death Of Lovers is a side-project for three of the four members of the band Nothing. Members of Nothing have played in hardcore and punk bands before forming Nothing, which Pitchfork describes as “springtime shoegaze with a ’90s alt-pop sensibility.” Death Of Lovers goes another decade back for 80s-drenched rock that has been described as being perfect for a John Hughes movie soundtrack. It’s off to a rousing start at radio and might become one of the first new NACC Top 10 records in the new year.
Two albums score 94-spot climbs on the NACC 200 this week, but the tie goes to the higher charting record and that belongs to Doug Appling aka Emancipator. He’s a producer and DJ from Portland, OR. Baralku is his fifth studio album (and eighth overall including two remix collections and a live album) and is out now on Loci Records. It jumps from 147-53 this week. Honorable mention goes to Nona Hendryx and Gary Lucas. The Labelle singer and Beefheart guitarist’s tribute to Captain Beefheart’s legendary catalog moves 174-80.
The last top add of the year comes from My Morning Jacket lead singer and primary songwriter Jim James. Tribute To 2 is a follow-up to his debut solo EP, 2009’s Tribute To, which covered music from George Harrison. This new set features covers of songs from Brian Wilson, Elvis Presley and even Sonny & Cher. In between these cover sets, James released two solo albums of original material as well as two My Morning Jacket LPs.
