#1 Gorillaz | The NACC Charts for August 14, 2018

Records continue to be matched and fall almost every week on the NACC 200 lately. We had a new #1 longevity champion in Courtney Barnett. Father John Misty matched Ty Segall by reaching #1 on the NACC 200 last week for the second time. And now this week, Gorillaz join those two artists as the only acts to reach #1 on the NACC 200 twice. The Grammy Award-winning virtual band’s sixth LP, The Now Now (Parlophone/Warner Bros.), ascends 3-1 about 16 months after their fifth LP, Humanz, reached #1 on the NACC 200. The Now Now‘s nearest competitor for #1 is actually the aforementioned Ty Segall who will try to become the only artist to reach #1 on the NACC 200 three times. His project with The White Fence is certainly lining itself up for that possibility, rising 10-4 this week.

We’re featuring Thin Lips for a third week-in-a-row now. Two weeks ago, the Philadelphia band’s sophomore Lame-O release, Chosen Family, was the week’s most-added record. Last week it was the highest debut on the NACC 200. And this week, the album scores the biggest climb into the Top 10, rising 20-9. The trio has two more dates this next week with their friends Hop Along (bandmembers Frances Quinlan and Joe Reinhart co-produced Thin Lips’ album) before playing seven shows with Slaughter Beach, Dog starting Friday, August 24. Also reaching the NACC Top 10 this week: Astronauts Inc. (11-6) and Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever (who return to the Top 10, rising 13-10 after previously reaching #5).

Last week we mentioned we had a Top 20 debut on the NACC 200 in back-to-back weeks for only the second time. This week, that record falls as we have a third week-in-a-row with a Top 20 debut. It comes from an act with our new favorite name: Free Cake For Every Creature, who debut at #19 with their Double Double Whammy release, The Bluest Star. Though we are still waiting for our free cake. Might we also suggest, in an effort to connect even more with the young voting block, that Bernie Sanders adopt offering ‘free cake for every creature’ as well as universal health care? Though, if everyone has access to free cake, maybe they will need to use their health care even more. What a conundrum.

Racing 110 spots up the NACC 200 to land the week’s biggest move, up 189-79, is Body/Head (two things that go great together, and, dare we say, don’t function well without one another). Formed in 2012 by Kim Gordon (after the end of both Sonic Youth and her marriage to Thurston Moore) and Bill Nace, The Switch (Matador) is their second studio LP. A Live LP and two EPs are also part of the duo’s discography. Body/Head finds Gordon’s vocals low in the mix and awash in guitar noise, feedback & reverb for this experimental project.

The ever-prolific Oh Sees have returned just less than a year after the release of their NACC Top 10-peaking LP, Orc. Led by John Dwyer, who is the only original member of the band dating back to its origins in 1997, Smote Reverser may be only the second album recorded under the name Oh Sees, but it’s the band’s 21st LP (with other albums released under the names Thee Oh Sees, OCS, The Oh Sees and The Ohsees). The Castle Face album is this week’s most added release and, if history is any indication, should make a splashy debut on the NACC 200 next week.

The NACC Single Chart has a new #1 this week. It comes from Iron & Wine. “What Hurts Worse” is the lead single from their upcoming Weed Garden release, expected August 31. The most-added single this week is from So Many Wizards with their self-released “Don’t Be Afraid.”
