After skyrocketing 33-1 (the biggest climb ever to #1 on the NACC 200) a few weeks ago, Mitski is in no rush to surrender the top spot. Her Dead Oceans release, Be The Cowboy, locks down #1 for a third straight week. Mitski starts a European tour next week. US dates begin October 19th in Philadelphia and over half of the nearly two dozen dates on that leg of the tour are already sold out. Can’t wait to see her live? 
Just look up last night’s episode of The Daily Show on Comedy Central where she was the musical guest. Next week Mitski will try to make it a month on top. Death Cab For Cutie (3-2) and Wild Nothing (10-4) will be her biggest competition in preventing that from happening.
Two new albums reach the NACC Top 10 this week. Climbing 16-8 are Rubblebucket. But making an even bigger move are English quintet, IDLES, who race from 26-9 with their Partisan release, Joy As An Act Of Resistance. Their sophomore LP was last week’s highest debut and has wasted no time reaching the Top 10. Currently one of the Top 10-best reviewed albums of 2018, IDLES begin a month long string of US tour dates beginning Friday in Chicago in support of Joy As As Act Of Resistence.
The reaction to any new music from Kurt Vile speaks volumes as to the anticipation for his new album. First single “Loading Zones” reached #1 on the NACC Singles Chart and also climbed higher on the NACC 200 than any other single this year. With the release of a second track (“Bassackwards”) from his newly announced LP, Bottle It In, he has a rare highest debut on the chart this week with an Advance Tracks version of a record. Only one other album (Beck’s Colors) has done that before. Honorable mention goes to Anna Calvi whose Hunter LP debuts one spot behind Vile at #36.
Leaping 181-22 on the NACC 200 this week are Brighton, England quartet The Kooks. Formed in 2004, only two original members of the band remain: lead singer Luke Pritchard and lead guitarist Hugh Harris, though the current lineup of the band have been together for six years now. The Kooks have just released their fifth LP, Let’s Go Sunshine. Released on AWAL, Let’s Go Sunshine is the band’s first independent release and recently debuted inside the Top 10 on the UK Albums Chart, giving them their highest ranked record there in a decade.
This week’s most added record comes from English band, Spiritualized. Formed in 1990 by Jason Pierce, the band’s lineup has changed from album to album with nearly 20 current and former members. Pierce is the only constant. And Nothing Hurt, out on Fat Possum, is the band’s eighth LP and first since 2012. This is the first album Pierce recorded on his own, mainly on a laptop in his bedroom. It was a process he found so disheartening that he has said on numerous occasions that this will be his final Spiritualized album, though he seems to be changing his tune a bit now that the album is complete. Only time will tell. Regardless, it looks like it will be another very well received album in a career that has seen nothing but those in the past.
With Kurt Vile ‘graduating’ from the NACC Singles Chart this week, Phosphorescent rise to #1 with “New Birth In New England.” After spending five straight weeks inside the Top 3 behind both Metric and Kurt Vile, the first single from the upcoming album, C’est La Vie, rises 2-1. We have a rare tie in this week’s most-added single honor. Radiohead’s Thom Yorke has a new song, “Suspiria,” which comes from the score he wrote for the upcoming Luca Guadagnino’s (Call Me By Your Name) horror reboot of the same name. Tied with Yorke is hip hop artist, author and poet, George Watsky who professionally goes simply by Watsky. “Welcome To The Family” is his new single.
