No doubt, nails were being bitten and brows wiped as the deadline to report ticked down to its final minutes yesterday. For most of Tuesday, Hippo Campus were leading NACC’s live-time tracking chart (available to subscribers). With five minutes to go, Low seemed to have taken over the top spot. But in the end, it was (as it has been for two months now) Mitski who took the crown and she now owns the record all to herself of the longest run ever on the NACC 200: eight incredible weeks. Be The Cowboy (Dead Oceans) has simply dominated the NACC 200 since its biggest-ever climb to the top (33-1) back in August. Competitors are now closer though than they’ve been since she reached the top. Low (2-2), Lala Lala (5-3), Hippo Campus (6-4) and Cat Power (42-5) will all try to dethrone Mitski next week. Watch this space!
Speaking of Cat Power, Chan Marshall’s tenth LP, Wanderer, is the only new record in the Top 10. Her Domino release races from outside the Top 40, where it debuted last week, straight into the Top 5. Wanderer includes a cover of Rihanna’s “Stay” which Marshall first heard several years ago in her now ex-boyfriend’s car. It was on as she got in and he said: “oh, there’s my girl.” She assumed he was talking about her until the song ended and he turned the radio off. Years later she heard the song again in a taxi and cried the whole ride. That night, out with a friend at karaoke, she performed the song 16 times.
Kurt Vile has been a college and community favorite for years and that love affair shows no signs of abatement now that his new album, Bottle It Up, has been released. The album’s first track, “Loading Zones,” became the highest-charting single on the NACC 200 earlier this year. And now, on its add week, the album has already debuted at #25. Bottle It Up is Vile’s seventh solo LP. He also has a collaborative LP with Courtney Barnett (released last year), a slew of EPs, and two LPs from his time as a member of The War On Drugs.
The NACC 200’s biggest mover this week comes from Death Valley Girls. Founded by former Hole drummer Patty Schemel (fun fact: Patty was Kurt Cobain’s first choice to drum for Nirvana before Dave Grohl auditioned) and her brother Larry on guitar, the LA-based quartet also includes vocalist Bonnie Bloomgarden and bass player Rachel Orosco. Death Valley Girls released their debut LP, Street Venom, in 2014. Patty Schemel left the group shortly thereafter with Laura Kelsey taking over on drums. A 2016 album, Glow In The Dark, followed. After releasing those first two albums on Burger Records, the group’s third LP, Darkness Rains, has been put out on Suicide Squeeze. It races from 180-49 on the NACC 200 this week.
Taking most-added honors this week are San Francisco duo The Dodos. Formed in 2005, by Meric Long and Logan Kroeber, The Dodos have released seven LPs. Their latest release, Certainty Waves, is their third album put out on Polyvinyl Records. They are set to kick off a North American Fall Tour next Tuesday in Bellingham, WA at Wild Buffalo with the final date of the 19-stop tour happening November 16th at the Bowery Ballroom in New York.
Last week’s most-added single from Sharon Van Etten is this week’s new #1 on the NACC Singles Chart. “Comeback Kid” rises 4-1. It’s the lead track on her forthcoming Remind Me Tomorrow LP, due out January 18. Back with a double-sided single is NACC 200-toppers, Girlpool. “Lucy’s” b/w “Where You Sink” is the most-added single of the week.
