This week Cloud Nothings join a select group of musicians that have reached #1 on the NACC 200 more than once. By rising 4-1 this week with their Carpark release, Last Building Burning, the Cleveland-based quartet have now joined Ty Segall & Father John Misty as the only artists that have topped the NACC 200 twice. They first reached #1 in early 2017 with Life Without Sound and now their sixth LP has pushed Kero Kero Bonito out of the top spot after they advanced an identical 4-1 last week (this week they fall back to #4). Cloud Nothings began as a solo project for lead singer Dylan Baldi. He signed to Carpark as a one-man band in 2010 when the label re-issued his previously released debut EP as an expanded LP. That same year Cloud Nothings became a four-piece. A fresh crop of albums has taken over the NACC Top 3 and the artists at #2 and #3. Elvis Costello And The Imposters (5-2) and J Mascis (16-3) will challenge for the top spot next week.
Speaking of J Mascis, his 16-3 leap is impressive, but it’s not the biggest climb into the NACC Top 10 this week. Two other albums rise into the top 10 this week as well. One is indie supergroup boygenius (Julian Baker, Phoebe Bridgers & Lucy Ducas), who climb 13-8. The other is this week’s biggest climber into the Top 10. It’s the ever-prolific Ty Segall, who races 99-10 with his fourth album of 2018. Fudge Sandwich is an all-covers album and is Segall’s 13th studio album. It’s his second for In The Red after seven straight studio releases on Drag City.
The NACC 200’s biggest overall climb this week comes from the band that tied Ty Segall for most-added honors last week. Chicago duo Grapetooth leaps from 160-14 on the chart this week with their self-titled debut LP, out on Polyvinyl. Paste Magazine says Grapetooth’s 80s-inspired synthpop “could totally pass as the soundtrack to a John Hughes movie.” Comprised of Chris Bailoni and Twin Peaks’ Clay Frankel, the two met in 2012 and bonded over a shared love of music, including their joint obsession for Yellow Magic Orchestra and the Tokyo-based electronic group’s solo offshoots. They began making music together 2015 and have also been roommates since then.
The NACC 200’s highest debut this week comes from Georgia Anne Muldrow, who AllMusic described as “one of the most daring and important (albeit under-appreciated) artists of her time.” Since 2005, Muldrow has been combining funk, blues, electro, jazz fusion, and hip-hop and has released 17 LPs (some solo, some as collaborations with her husband, Dudley Perkins, and some under completely different names). You may also know Muldrow for a phrase she introduced into the public imagination: ‘stay woke.’ Muldrow’s Brainfeeder release, Overload, leaps onto the NACC 200 at #28. It also advances 14-6 on NACC Hip Hop this week.
Grabbing more Top 10 adds than any other album this week is San Francisco-based artist Rose Droll. Her debut LP, Your Dog (out on Father/Daughter Records) lands at #1 on the NACC Top Adds Chart on the power of 66 official adds. Droll has been playing piano since the age of seven and writes and records her music solo. A number of reviews for her music mention the individuality, uniqueness, and newness of her sound. It certainly seems to have connected with college and community radio it’s first week out.
Chaz Bundick (aka Toro y Moi) spends a second week at #1 on the NACC Singles Chart with “Freelance,” the first song released from his upcoming Outer Peace LP. Most-added single honors go to Scottish quintet The Twilight Sad. “VTr” is the first taste of their fifth LP, It Won/t Be Like This All The Time, due out in January.
