The last chart week of 2018 is in the books. Ty Segall locked down a second week at #1 with his In The Red Records-released covers album, Fudge Sandwich. As we mentioned last week, Ty Segall has reached #1 more than any other artist on the NACC 200 with his three chart-toppers. This week he also becomes the first artist ever to accumulate double-digit weeks at #1 on the big chart. His three #1 runs have spent a combined 10 weeks on top. Mitski comes closest with eight weeks at #1 (all from her record-breaking run with Be The Cowboy). Segall will look for a third week on top when charts resume in 2019. Ian Sweet (2-2) and Charles Bradley (5-3), as well as some late-charging records from Foxwarren and Jeff Tweedy, will also be in the mix. With three weeks off until our next chart, it’s anyone’s guess who will return on top.
The aforementioned Foxwarren makes some serious waves on the NACC 200 this week. After scoring most-added honors last week the Manitoba quartet, signed to Arts & Crafts, adds two feathers to their chart cap this week. They land the only new record to reach the final Top 10 of 2018 and they do so with a spectacular NACC 200 debut, opening at #9. That ties Lala Lala for the highest debut on the chart all year. It also makes them one of only four artists to ever debut inside the Top 10 (Alt-J & Washed Out are the others).
With Foxwarren taking two of our five showcase spots this week we can highlight the NACC 200’s two biggest climbers as opposed to just the biggest. The only album to climb more than 100 spots on the chart this week comes from David & Rene Pacheco. The brothers, along with their friend Jose Rojas, also perform as Thee Commons and have released three LPs since they formed in 2012. But the brothers are exploring news sounds and decided to do so under a new name: Tropa Magica. In an almost identical scenario to last week’s biggest climber, Rufus Du Sol, Tropa Magica debuted on the NACC 200 two weeks ago at #175. They dropped to #194 last week, but this week the album springs ahead 101 spots to become the week’s biggest climber.
Rising 77 spots, from 145-68 this week, is the chart’s second biggest mover. It comes from jazz-folk musician Ryley Walker. Like the NACC 200’s #1 album this week, Walker’s sixth LP is not an original work. The Rockford, IL native has covered the never officially released 2001 Dave Matthews Band album, The Lilywhite Sessions. While some outlets have brought up the derision the ‘dad rock’ icons have received over the years in reviewing this album, Walker covers the album without a hint of irony, proudly listing the band among his influences. In fact, when Walker and DMB were both playing in Montreal this past weekend, Walker got the opportunity to hang out with the band.
The NACC 200’s last most-added record of 2018 comes from Jeff Tweedy, an artist Consequence Of Sound recently called, “one of rock music’s most innovative songwriters.” Amazingly, across a career that dates back to 1984 and spans 16 LPs, Warm is Tweedy’s first solo album comprised of new material. The Wilco and Uncle Tupelo frontman did release a solo album in 2017 called Together At Last, but it consisted of music he had recorded earlier with Wilco as well as his side projects Golden Smog and Loose Fur. In addition to being this week’s most-added record (and besting the #2 album by nearly 30 adds), Warm, out on Wilco’s own dBpm Records, also debuts on the NACC 200 at #31, the second-highest debut of the week.
Climbing 4-1 on the NACC Singles Chart this week is Grimes (with longtime collaborator HANA). “We Appreciate Power” is the first song from her upcoming fifth album. Broken Bells (the collaboration between Danger Mouse and The Shins’ lead singer James Mercer) lands the most-added single of the week (and the highest placing single on the overall NACC Adds Chart all year) with “Shelter,” their first single in three years.
