#1 Sharon Van Etten | The NACC Charts for February 12, 2019

The battle for #1 continues. The Top 4 of the NACC 200 contains the same albums for a third straight week but with one major change: #1 & #2 trade places. So after getting climbed over a couple weeks ago by Toro Y Moi, and waiting patiently at #2 again last week, Sharon Van Etten rises to the top with her fifth studio album, Remind Me Tomorrow. The Jagjaguwar release is the second-best reviewed album of the year thus-far according to Metacritic. Still waiting in the wings to challenge Van Etten next week are Pedro The Lion (3-3) and Deerhunter (4-4). They’ll all have to face off against a new entry in the #1 battle: Girlpool.

Girlpool waste no time jumping in the #1 chase as they soar from 44-5 this week with their Anti- Records LP, What Chaos Is Imaginary. The Los Angeles duo’s third album was last week’s most-added release. It follows their debut self-titled 2014 EP and two subsequent LPs: Before The World Was Big (2015) and Powerplant (2017). That 2017 release reached #1 on the NACC 200, and it certainly seems like their new album has designs on a similar fate. Joining Girlpool in the NACC Top 10 this week are Beirut (48-9) and Sneaks (12-10).

Indie rock pioneer Bob Mould is back with a new solo record. Sunshine Rock is Mould’s thirteenth solo LP, though that number expands to 24 when his work as lead singer of Hüsker Dü and Sugar is factored in. The New York native attended school in the Twin Cities in the 80s and formed Hüsker Dü there. He had called San Francisco home for some time until 2015 with a move to Berlin, Germany, though he still retains his flat in San Fran. Mould credits Berlin for the decidedly optimistic tone of his new Merge Records release, which debuts at #38 on the NACC 200.

The chart’s biggest climber this week comes from Lancaster, Massachusetts-born DJ, producer, composer, and engineer, Jackson Stell, who records under the name Big Wild. His debut LP, Superdream (out on Counter Records), follows his 2017 debut EP Invincible. Stell has remixed music for the likes of Odesza, Chvrches, and Sylvan Esso, among others. Superdream soars from 174-47 on the NACC 200 this week.

Collecting more Top 10 adds than any other release this week is Buoys, the sixth studio album from Panda Bear, the moniker used by Animal Collective singer and co-founding member Noah Benjamin Lennox. Buoys was co-produced by Lennox along with Rusty Santos (who has produced and remixed music for Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, Ariel Pink & Born Ruffians among many others) in Lisbon, Spain, where Lennox now resides.

Vampire Weekend lock down #1 on the NACC Singles Chart again this week with “Harmony Hall” b/w “2021.” Taking most-added single honors is Austin, Texas quartet, White Denim with “Shanalala.”
