JANUARY: MD of the Month

CFUR’s Britt Meierhofer

1. How did you first hear about CFUR?
I first heard about CFUR waaaay back in 2003 during my first year of college here in Prince George, British Columbia!

2. How long have you been at CFUR (what is your history there), and how long have you been MD?
I’ve been the Music Director at CFUR for just over a year now! I am actually NOT a student (plot-twist, say whaaaa!?), but I am heavily involved in the music scene here in Prince George, and when the job posting popped up, I figured it would be a great day job to accent my music-laden life. I was right!

3. What are you most proud of accomplishing/changing at CFUR since you became MD?
Since I’ve become MD at CFUR, it seems that my excitement for new music coming down the pipe has rippled through the office and out of the speakers to our loyal local listeners (the Triple L’s, if you will), which is very rewarding!

4. How does CFUR make itself known on campus and in the community?
CFUR makes itself known on campus and in our community in many different ways. The most notable being that we support a lot of local concerts, and give musicians an opportunity to promote and grow their presence through local features, interviews, and videos of performances captured in-house! We are also the only radio station in town to play a heavy rotation of indie/DIY/alternative music, which sets us apart and creates buzz in the community.

5. What do you love most/dislike most about Prince George?
Prince George! It’s a character town, that’s for sure. My loves include the easy access to stellar outdoor activities and green/nature space, the short commutes (you can get anywhere in town in 15 minutes or less), and a lot of the people! Also, the music, cultural, and social justice scenes here are on an upswing/growth spurt, which is really cool to witness and be a part of. Dislikes include the overuse of comic sans font by local professional organizations, the lack of breakfast and Mexican restaurants to dine at, and the poor dating pool for single women in their late 20’s + (not ALL of us are into big trucks, UFC and being step-moms).

6. Who are your all-time Top 5 favorite artists/bands?
My top-5 favourite artists would be Pink Floyd, St. Vincent, Black Sabbath, Kurt Vile, and Neko Case. I think! That’s a hard question to answer. I’m adding The Moody Blues as a sixth, because rules are made to be broken.

7. What artist/band did you hear for the first time in the last year that impressed you the most?
An artist that I heard about for the first time this past year that I am super stoked on, is Damien Jurado. I love his 2016 release Visions of Us on the Land for it’s psychedelic alt-folk whimsy and somewhat nostalgic feel. The album really takes you on a journey, much like some of the early releases by The Moody Blues.

8. What artists passing in 2016 made you the saddest?
2016 was a real bastard for taking so many good musicians off the bill (amongst other, more heavy and ominous reasons, such as Tiny-Hands-with-the-Big-Bombs being a thing now).

9. What’s the one thing you can’t do without?
One thing I just can’t do without is CLEAN WATER TO DRINK. It’s insane that this is a thing that needs to be fought for.

10. What’s the best gift anyone has ever given you?
The best gift I’ve ever received is (get ready for it, this is super cheesy) the love and support of so many wonderful friends and family! Awwwwwwwww!

11. What is your perfect pizza?
Perfect pizza. Talk about tough questions to answer. Egads. Spinach, olives, garlic, and tomato with tons of cheese. LITERALLY TONS I’M A MADPERSON.

12. What is your favorite word? Least favorite?
Favourite word? Ignoramus is pretty decent. Least favourite word? Any racial/gendered slur!

13. Lightning Round:

Dog or Cat? Dog!
Too hot or Too cold? Too hot!
Coke or Pepsi? Neither!
Mountain or Beach? Beach!
Sun or Rain? Sun!
Watch TV or Read A Book? Both, simultaneously!
Beard or Clean Shaven? Beard (obvs)!
Dine or Delivery? Dine!
Hipster or Nerd? Hipster!
Toilet Paper: Over or Under? Over!

14. Would you rather have accordions for legs or have a huge belly button 10 inches long that swayed to the beat of popular music?
I really hate the idea of a droopy, draggy belly button. Egads. I’ll take accordions for legs, if I must.

15. Do you like Anne Hathaway?
Re: Anne Hathaway; I am indifferent.
