The weeks-long log-jam at the top of the NACC 200 is starting to break up ever so slightly, but it doesn’t impact the #1 spot this week. That one belongs to Sharon Van Etten, who remains on top for a second week with her fifth studio album, Remind Me Tomorrow. The Jagjaguwar release fends off all comers once again. Former #1 Outer Peace from Toro y Moi hangs tough at #2, but Van Etten’s main competition next week looks to be Girlpool, who rise 5-3 in search of their second straight NACC 200 chart-topper.
Only one album reaches the NACC Top 10 this week, rising 13-9. It comes from Los Angeles-based outfit Cherry Glazerr. Stuffed & Ready (out on Secretly Canadian) is the band’s third LP and follows 2017’s Apocalipstick. Cherry Glazerr (named after NPR reporter Chery Glaser) began as a solo project for then 15-year old Clementine Creevy. The band expanded to a quartet in 2013 and is currently a trio. Members have come and gone with the one constant being Creevy. Fun-fact: Creevy has appeared in the show Transparent fronting a fictional rock band called Glitterish.
Soaring 199-31 on the NACC 200 this week is longtime indie rock project Mercury Rev. Formed in 1989, the band has maintained their indie cult status releasing eight LPs under the Mercury Rev moniker. The two of their six remaining original members, Jonathan Donahue and Sean “Grasshopper” Mackowaik, teamed up with Midlake’s Jesse Chandler for the band’s ninth LP, a left-field concept record covering in its entirety, the 1968 country-rock opera The Delta Sweete from Bobbie Gentry. Out on Partisan Records, Bobbie Gentry’s The Delta Sweete Revisited swaps out Donahue’s signature vocals and instead enlists a different female vocalist on each of the album’s 12 tracks including Lucinda Williams, Phoebe Bridgers, Norah Jones, Marissa Nadler, Kaela Sinclair from M83, Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval, Laetitia Sadler of Stereolab, Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell, and more.
The NACC 200’s highest debut this week comes from Palo Alto, CA-born and Hanover, NH-raised Kelsie Hogue, who records under the name Sir Babygirl. Her music is unabashedly queer pop and her Father/Daughter-released debut album, Crush On Me, encapsulates her three passions: bubblegum pop, comedy, and musical theater. Seriously, anyone who claims their a-ha moment was seeing Lisa Simpson playing the saxophone is someone you want to know more about. And college & community radio seems keen to do just that with an album that debuts at #44 on the chart this week.
Landing more Top 10 Adds this week than any other artist is Homeshake, the solo project of Montreal musician Pete Sagar. Sagar started the project in 2012 but decided to focus on it full-time in 2014 when he stepped away from his role as guitarist for Mac DeMarco’s live band. He’s released four studio albums since then, including his latest, Helium, released on Sinderlyn Records (the sister label to Captured Tracks). It was a particularly competitive week in adds with the #2 and #3-most added records (Jessica Pratt & Ladytron respectively) just a handful of Top 10 Adds behind Homeshake.
Enjoying a third straight week at #1 on the NACC Singles Chart is Vampire Weekend. “Harmony Hall” b/w “2021” leads the chart again this week. Grabbing most-added single honors are Madeline Kenney and Flock Of Dimes (the moniker for Jenn Wasner). The split singles “Helpless” and “The Sisters” come from the close friends and roommates.
