#1 Weyes Blood | The NACC Charts for April 16, 2019

A frantic game of musical chairs is taking place at the top of the NACC 200 with our fifth #1 in as many weeks. For those who thought Karen O & Danger Mouse and Andrew Bird would battle it out for #1 again this week, you are half right. For most of the reporting period, Andrew Bird looked like he’d get back to #1 after surrendering the top spot last week. But coming out of left field was Natalie Mering aka Weyes Blood, soaring 8-1 and reaching #1 in three short weeks on the chart with her Sub Pop debut, Titanic Rising. We’ve now had nine NACC 200 #1s this year vs. six at this time last year.

Just one new record reaches the Top 10 this week. It’s from British artist Nilüfer Yanya. After initially garnering attention with music she posted on Soundcloud, she was offered to join a girl group Louis Tomlinson of One Direction was putting together. She turned that offer down and released three solo EPs between 2016 and 2018. Miss Universe is her debut LP out on ATO Records. It’s one of the best-reviewed records of 2019 thus far and lands Yanya her first NACC Top 10 album, rising 12-8.

Last week’s most-added record from Shana Cleveland, the lead singer of La Luz, is off to a rousing start. Her first completely solo release, Night Of The Worm Moon, leaps onto the NACC 200 this week at #25. It’s one of only two records to debut in the Top 50 of the chart this week, the other being The Drums at #42.

There are a number of big jumps on the NACC 200 this week. Notable moves include Toronto punk quartet Pup, up 149-22 and nine-member instrumental outfit The Budos Band who comes one spot shy of being this week’s biggest climber, leaping 182-32. But this week’s biggest jump belongs to Washington DC post-punk quartet Priests. Their second LP, The Seduction of Kansas, advances 184-33 and becomes one of just five records this year to climb 150+ spots on the NACC 200. The album is out on the band’s own Sister Polygon imprint.

Broken Social Scene is back. The band, formed by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning in 1999, includes a rotating cast of Canadian luminaries in the indie rock world. They’ve now combined their two recent EPs, Let’s Try The After Volumes 1 & 2 (Arts & Crafts) into a full LP and it’s the most added record of the week, collecting 82 Top 10 adds. The album follows their fifth LP, the NACC 200 Chart-topping Hug Of Thunder, in 2017.

Tame Impala hold down #1 on the NACC Singles Chart for a third week with “Patience.” They also become the second act to land two songs on the NACC Singles Chart simultaneously (Metric was the first) as “Borderline” debuts at #17. Most-added on the singles side this week is Atlanta band Omni. “Delicacy” b/w “I Can’t Dance” are new songs on the re-activated Sub Pop Singles Club.

You can find the Top 5 of the NACC Adds Chart and all of this week’s #1 genre releases and most-added genre records below. After no new #1s on any NACC music chart aside from the NACC 200 last week, this week sees a slew of new #1s. NACC NEXT, Hip Hop, Heavy, Jazz, Electronic, and Blues all see new chart-toppers.
