After five weeks on top of the NACC 200, The Black Keys release their grip on #1 and ease back down to #2. They’ve spent seven weeks on the chart now and have only ever occupied #1 and #2. This week’s new #1 is a very bittersweet one. It comes from David Berman, who returned to music just this year after a decade away (upon the dissolution of his band Silver Jews). Berman’s new music was recorded under the name Purple Mountains and the self-titled debut album came out in May on Drag City. Tragically, Berman took his own life on August 7.
Three new albums reach the NACC Top 10 this week. One simultaneously lands this week’s biggest climb into the Top 10 and is also the biggest climber overall with a massive 172-spot leap (the fourth biggest climb ever on the NACC 200). It comes from last week’s most added album, Any Human Friend, from English singer Marika Hackman. The Sub Pop release soars 182-10 on the chart. Also reaching the Top 10 are Oh Sees, leaping 11-4.

Since Hackman grabs two of our five features this week, we have the opportunity to showcase another record. As we featured Oh Sees last week, when they debuted at #11, we will shine a light on the third new record to reach the NACC Top 10 this week. Beloved Milwaukee folk-punk band Violent Femmes have returned with their tenth LP, Hotel Last Resort (out on PIAS). Formed in 1980, Violent Femmes were one of the most successful alternative rock bands of the 80s, with hits like “Blister In The Sun” and “Gone Daddy Gone.” Their new album jumps 13-7 on the NACC 200 this week.

Sleater-Kinney returns to the NACC 200 this week with the highest debut of the week, opening at #47. Formed in Olympia, WA in 1994 by Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker, Sleater-Kinny has released nine studio albums including their new Sub Pop LP, The Center Won’t Hold. Longtime drummer Janet Weiss, who had been with the band since 1996, chose to leave after the recording but before the release of the album.

The battle for the ‘most-added’ title this week was as close as they come. English rock band Ride collected 69 adds with their sixth LP, and second since they reunited. But it’s Katherine Bell, a Portland, OR-based musician and self-described “radical indigenous queer feminist,” that grabs top-added honors with her 70 Top 10 adds. Recording as Black Belt Eagle Scout, her sophomore LP, At The Party With My Brown Friends (out on Saddle Creek), also sneaks onto the NACC 200 this week at #188.

The New Pornographers are back. “Falling Down The Stairs Of Your Smile,” the first single from their upcoming eighth LP, In The More Code Of Brake Lights, climbs 3-1 on the NACC Singles Chart this week. Los Angeles band Death Valley Girls land the most-added single of the week with their new song, “Death Cleaver,” the only single to land on the Top 30 NACC Adds Chart this week.
