Tell us about WCRD. How did it get started and how did you first hear about it?

WCRD started with funding from David Letterman, Ball State’s most famous alum. We started on AM broadcasting in the 80s, and in 2004 got our FCC license to broadcast as WWHI 91.3. WCRD is our informal name. I heard about it through my roommate freshman year who was involved because of her degree.

How long have you been at WCRD? What is your history there?

I’ve been with WCRD all four years, I started as a DJ and moved to our music team. I was assistant director my junior year and am now music director, with my assistants Abby and Ryan.

What does WCRD do to connect with students on campus at Ball State as well as the community at large in Muncie?

I would say that the biggest thing WCRD does is DJ different Ball State events, like our College of Communication Information and Media’s Super Party, where all CCIM groups recruit members. WCRD runs the cake walk and everyone always has a good time. As for the community, we have partnerships with different local businesses and help them out when we can.

What was your favorite release of 2019?

Pony – Orville Peck for sure.

Do you have a favorite artist or album you never get tired of listening to?

I could listen to Fleet Foxes’ discography every day and have it not get old. I love Helplessness Blues, and Crack-Up grew on me as well.

Which artist/band has put on the best show you’ve ever seen live?

Story time! My freshman year, I went to see Mac Demarco and the Flaming Lips with a bunch of people from Music Team (thanks, WCRD!). The Flaming Lips are hands down the coolest show I’ve been to, with all the blow up props and stage design. It was a defining part of my year.

Who is an artist or band outside the realm of what your station plays that people might be surprised to know you love?

I can (almost) rap the entirety of Because the Internet and Camp by Childish Gambino. I love him.

What is your best childhood memory?

This one’s hard… I think spending time during my summers on my grandparents’ boat.

What event in your life would you say has shaped you the most as a person?

My decision to come to Ball State/pursue a music degree. I wouldn’t be where I was if I wasn’t at Ball State.

If you could choose, what time period in the past would you most want to travel back to and visit?

This is cheesy but I think my dream would have been being in my 20s in the 90s. I love grunge and I would’ve loved to see all of the actions surrounding the scene happen in real time.

Do you have a favorite restaurant in Muncie that you always make sure to take guests/visitors to?

There’s a really good Thai restaurant called Tuppee Tong that is super small and off the map. It’s so good and it serves Thai iced tea!

What in your life brings you the most joy?

Surrounding myself with the people I love.

Flea Bag for sure, it really made me feel the whole spectrum of human emotion.

And finally… with the Holidays here, what is your favorite tradition your family does this time of year?

I really like the nontraditional Christmas dinner and game night I do with my dad’s side of the family. We always have a different menu, like Chinese, Mexican, or baked potato bar.
