Osees land their first NACC 200 chart-topping album

A three-way battle for #1 on the NACC 200 this week between current one-word champion, Bully, and fast rising albums from other one word bands, Osees and Cults, resulted in Osees landing their first NACC 200 chart-topping album. The San Francisco-based band has been a frequent visitor to the chart (and to our Wednesday recaps), but have never made the journey to #1. They rise 2-1 with Protean Threat, their 21st LP, out on Castle Face (co-founded by Osees core member, John Dwyer).

The turnover in the upper tier of the NACC 200 has perhaps never been more pronounced. Seven albums reach the NACC Top 20 this week and the four albums to debut inside the Top 10 all do so from outside the Top 20. The fastest-moving climber among them is simultaneously for both the Top 10 and the entire NACC 200. It comes from former Hüsker Dü & Sugar lead singer, Bob Mould, though Mould’s solo output now vastly outnumbers the discography of his previous bands. His fourteenth solo LP, Blue Hearts (Merge), pulls no punches, addressing his rage for the precarious state of the world. The album soars 112-9.

Another new album making big waves this week is Free Love from Durham, NC duo Sylvan Esso. Their third album (out on Loma Vista) is this week’s most-added (72 Top 10 Adds) and jumps 47-13. Free Love is Sylvan Esso’s second straight album to take most-added honors.

One of the other artists soaring into this week’s NACC Top 10 is Seattle quintet Fleet Foxes. The band’s fourth LP, Shore (Anti-), races 23-2 as well as reaching #1 on both the NACC NEXT and NACC Non-Comm Charts.

Also blasting into this week’s NACC Top 10 is Detroit, MI native, and longtime College and Community radio darling Sufjan Stevens. In addition to over a dozen EPs and two collaborative LPs, Stevens has eight solo LPs to his name, including his latest, The Ascension (out on Asthmatic Kitty, the label he co-founded with his stepfather Lowell Brams). This week he jumps 49-6 on the NACC 200.

Oakland, CA duo Tune-Yards return with “nowhere. man.” It’s their first new music in two years. The song leaps 14-1 this week on NACC Singles. Montreal duo Secret Sun is also back (after a six-year lull) with this week’s most added single: “Little Pieces.” It’s the first release from their forthcoming sophomore LP, Winter Love, due October 30.

The NACC 200’s Top 20, the Top 5 overall NACC Adds, this week’s genre chart-toppers, and the week’s most-added genre records are included below. In addition to a return to #1 at Jazz, there are new chart-toppers at Electronic, Folk, R&B/Soul, and Blues.
