The Avalanches lock down a second week at #1 with their third album

After a huge 23-1 leap to #1 on the NACC 200 last week, Australian-duo The Avalanches unsurprisingly lock down a second week at #1 with their third album, We Will Always Love You (Astralwerks). In fact, no album has ever climbed from outside the Top 20 to #1 and not spent the following week at #1 as well. But The Avalanches have some fresh competition for the chart crown in the legendary Sir Paul McCartney, who leaps 14-2 this week with his sights on his own NACC 200 chart-topper.

For just the eighth time the NACC 200’s biggest climber of the week is simultaneously the biggest climb into the NACC Top 10. The honor goes to Stockholm, Sweden six-piece Viagra Boys. While one might jump to conclusions given their name that these are a group of geriatric fellows that need some help in the bedroom, their name is actually more clever, commenting on the band’s disdain for the patriachy and ridicules the normative idea of hypermasculinity. Sounds good to us! The band’s second LP, Welfare Jazz (Year0001), leaps from 155-8 on the NACC 200 this week.

Last week’s most-added record, At The Moonbase (Lame-O), from Philadelphia quartet Slaughter Beach, Dog, fulfills the prediction we made last week of a splashy debut on the NACC 200 as this week’s highest debut, roaring onto the NACC 200 at #15. The band have recorded four LPs, including their latest, since forming in 2014.

This week’s second highest debut comes from Andrew Mayer Cohen, who performs as Mayer Hawthorne. The Ann Arbor, MI native has most recently been on the NACC 200 with his side project, Tuxedo. Rare Changes (Big Bucks) collects the singles Mayer Hawthorne released between June 2019 and July 2020 and debuts at #21 this week.

Buck Meek‘s second solo release away from his band Big Thief, enjoys most-added honors this week. Two Saviors (Keeled Scales) collects 55 Top 10 Adds to handily take the most-added crown. The album includes contributions from Meek’s brother Dylan as well as Big Thief bandmate, Adrianne Lenker, who is currently on the NACC 200 with her own solo release.

English artist Jade Bird is back with the first new music since her 2019 self-titled debut LP. “Headstart” climbs 3-1 on the NACC Singles Chart this week. American artist Molly Burch has also returned with her first new music since 2019. “Emotion” featuring Wild Nothing now owns bragging rights for being the most-added single so far in the young new year.

The NACC 200’s Top 20, the Top 5 overall NACC Adds, this week’s genre chart-toppers, and the week’s most-added genre records are included below. In addition to a return to #1 at NACC Canadian there are new chart-toppers at Folk, Latin, Jazz, NACC NEXT, and NACC Non-Comm.
