Japanese Breakfast scores a third week at #1

Japanese Breakfast went into the summer break with two weeks at #1 on the NACC 200 under their collective belts. The band, which includes wife and husband team Michelle Launer and Peter Bradley, have crossed the week off and kept their hold on the top spot with third LP, Jubilee (Dead Oceans/Secretly Group). They’ll have some stiff competition in their quest to nab a fourth week on top with fast charging albums from King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard (6-2) and Modest Mouse (13-3) nipping at their heels.

Four new albums reach the NACC Top 10 this week. Lucy Dacus jumps 19-7, The Mountain Goats sail 56-10, and the aforementioned Modest Mouse reach the Top 3 in just their second week on the chart. But it’s Beatrice Laus, who records as Beabadoobee, that makes the biggest climb, leaping 65-9 with her new collaborative release. She teamed up with the 1975’s Matt Healy and George Daniel, who produced and co-wrote the four song EP, Our Extended Play (Dirty Hit) with Laus. It follows her debut LP, Fake It Flowers, last year that reached #1 on the NACC 200.

The chart’s highest debut this week comes from Poughkeepsie five-piece Spud Cannon. The lovers of starchy tubers (and the apparent launching of them) formed in 2016 at Vassar College. Their third full-length album, Good Kids Make Bad Apples (out on Brooklyn Indie label Good Eye Records), leaps 155-16 on the NACC 200 this week.

Brooklyn-based quartet Pom Pom Squad enjoys this week’s biggest climb on the NACC 200 with their debut LP, Death Of A Cheerleader (City Slang). Begun in 2015 as a solo project for lead singer Mia Berrin, who has also released two EPs along the way, their new album soars from 155-16 this week besting the next biggest climber by 20 positions.

Nandi Rose Plunkett, who records as Half Waif, returns to our chart recap by collecting more adds than anyone else this week with her fifth LP, Mythopoetics (Anti-). Plunkett, who also contributes to her husband’s band Pinegrove, was most recently included in our chart recap for scoring the highest debut of the week with her 2020 LP, The Caretaker.

Los Angeles quartet Illuminati Hotties climb 4-1 on the NACC Singles Chart this week with “Pool Hopping,” one of two preview tracks from their upcoming third LP, Let Me Do One More, due October 1. Scoring the most adds of the singles that added this week is Gorillaz and Blur’s Damon Albarn. The first single from his forthcoming third solo LP, The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream Flows (due Nov. 12), is “Polaris.”
