Japanese Breakfast go for a fourth week at #1

The year rolls along with a markedly lower tally of #1 records (six) than previous years. At this time last year we’d had 11 #1s, in 2018 it was 10, and in 2019 we’d seen 14 chart-toppers by the third week of July. This week Japanese Breakfast earns the second-longest chart run of the year (behind the whopping 12-week run Arlo Parks enjoyed beginning last February). Their third LP, Jubilee (Dead Oceans/Secretly Group) spends a fourth week on top. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard (2-2) closes the gap between #1 and #2 and will mount another challenge for the top spot along with Modest Mouse (3-3) & Lucy Dacus (7-5).

Only one album reaches the NACC Top 10 this week. Melbourne, Australia jazz-funk quartet Hiatus Kaiyote leaps 31-7 with their third LP (and first since 2015), Mood Valiant (Brainfeeder/Ninja Tune). Formed in 2011, Hiatus Kaiyote is led by Nai Palm, who released her first solo LP in 2017. The album reaches #1 on the NACC R&B/Soul Chart as well.

The highest debut of the week comes from Nandi Rose Plunkett, who records as Half Waif. After taking most-added honors last week with her fifth LP, Mythopoetics (Anti-), the solo artist and Pinegrove band member leaps onto the NACC 200 at #18. It’s one of less than two dozen records to make a Top 20 debut this year.

Brighton, England six-piece The Go! Team is back with their sixth LP, Get Up Sequences Part One (Memphis Industries). The band’s inception dates back to 2000 as a solo project for band member Ian Parton who recorded it in his parent’s kitchen. A band was formed in 2004 when Parton was invited to play the Accelerator Festival in Sweden and had no band to fulfill that request. The Go! Team has been an actual team ever since.

Claire Cottrill, who records as Clairo, returns with her sophomore LP, Sling (FADER/Republic). After enlisting Rostam to co-produce her NACC 200 chart-topping debut Immunity, Clairo turned to another ‘it indie producer,’ Bleachers Jack Antonoff, to co-produce Sling. The result is the most-added album of the week (her second). It also debuts at #96 on the NACC 200 this week.

The first single from Courtney Barnett‘s upcoming third LP, Things Take Time, Take Time (due out in November) takes over the top spot on the NACC Singles Chart this week. “Rae Street” leaps 10-1. Austin, TX duo Hovvdy will be releasing their fourth album, this fall. The title track, “True Love,” is this week’s most-added single.

This week’s Top 5 overall NACC Adds, the genre chart-toppers, and the week’s most-added genre records are included below. There are new chart-toppers at World, Hip Hop, Chill, and R&B/Soul this week.
