September MD of the Month:

Sasha Goldblatt

WHUS Radio – UConn’s Sound Alternative

Listen to NACC's MD Takeover on Spotify!

How long have you two been involved with WHUS and how did you first hear about the station?

I first heard about the station while looking for on-campus jobs. Little did I know, it’d turn out to be my favorite involvement at UConn. I’ve been at the station for two years now.

What advice can you offer other MDs as the best way to get their DJs to play the new music your station receives and how you get your on-air staff to play the new music you receive.

At WHUS, we have the New Music Committee which meets once a week and allows students to review the CDs that are sent to the station. This is a great way to increase listens and engagement on the mew materials we receive.

What is the part of your job you love the most?

The people. Everyone at the station is so incredible, I’ve learned so much from them.

What has been your favorite album released so far in 2021?

Off the Rails by Wallice

Do you have a favorite artist or album you never get tired of listening to?

Jon Bellion’s The Definition. Such a great OG album.

Which artist/band has put on the best live show you’ve ever seen? Have you attended a live show recently now that tours are beginning to happen? If so, how was it seeing live music again?

The best live show I’ve seen has got to be when I saw ILLENIUM at Boston Calling. They had a huge setup of graphics and the beat drops were ridiculous.

Who is an artist or band totally outside the realm of the music you play on WHUS that people might be surprised to know you love?

Miley Cyrus. Her vocals give me the chills.

If you had the power to instantly change one thing going on in the world at the moment, what would it be?

I think I would provide free menstrual products to all those with periods. This is a topic I’m very passionate about.

What event in your life would you say has shaped you the most as a person?

As cliche as it sounds, studying abroad in Amsterdam. I was there while COVID hit, though I still had a life changing, incredible experience. Exploring different cultures and traveling are other passions of mine.

If you could choose, what time period in the past would you most want to travel back to visit and why?

I’d go back to the 1920’s to see the feminist movement. I love learning about American history around that era.

Do you have a favorite restaurant in town (dine-in or take out) that you recommend people try?

EatJoy in Storrs is the best poke in town.

What in your life brings you the most joy?

Music and animals. Easy.

Lightning Round:

Dog or Cat? Dog
Morning Person or Night Owl? Night owl
City or Country? City
Beach or Mountains? Mountains
Watch TV or Read A Book? Watch TV
Sunny or Rainy? Sunny
Restaurant or Home Cooking? Home cooking
Pants or Shorts? Pants
Warm or Cold drinks? Cold drinks

Do you have any current favorite shows you’re enjoying/binging? How about a movie (new or old) that you’ve watched recently that you loved?

La La Land is my all time favorite movie. I recommend it to all music lovers.

Finally and most importantly: Halloween and Christmas stuff showing up in stores already… “blasphemous!” or “I love holidays, bring it on!”

I love Halloween AND Christmas (even though I’m Jewish). I say bring it on!
