COMMUNITY
Community Interview with Caroline Shadood, MUTE
“College and community radio is the only vestige of media that reliably operates under artist friendly community-driven ideals.”
Community Interview with James Holland, Airplay Junkie
“College and community radio is actively excited about new music, new artists, and sharing music that might not be heard elsewhere. Not only do they provide one of the most accessible ways for artists to get their music out there but it’s one of the few ways for an artist to have a presence in individual markets across North America.”
Genre DJ of the Month | Ken Luther the Metal Professor, WVLP Valparaiso
“I’ve never been informed that I have any regular listeners in the student crowd. I think they’re pretty shocked to learn that this old professor guy has a heavy metal radio show.”
November MD of the Month | Nicole Di Donato, CJRU Toronto
“CJRU’s eclectic sounds and voices make it unique. We encourage people of all identities, backgrounds, and ages to produce their own radio programming. We want to highlight the voices of all communities that make up and surround Ryerson.”
Interview with Jessi Frick, Father/Daughter Records
“I started Father/Daughter Records with my dad in 2010. We’ve shared a mutual love and excitement for music so when I brought the idea of the label to him, he signed on immediately.”
Interview with Jordan Howard, The Syndicate
“Being able to provide independent and local artists with a means to get their music out there really inspired me to keep going and to keep trying to help my own community.”
October DJ of the Month, Black Liquid – WDCE 90.1FM
“I have my own Independent Hip-Hop event series at Strange Matter called Face Melt Friday, which now with 42 events is one of the longest running showcase series in the history of Richmond’s Hip-Hop culture and is one of the things I am most proud of.”
October MD of the Month, Nibu Abraham – 90.1 KPFT
“Volunteers host, report, DJ and produce virtually all of the programming you hear on KPFT. Our impact has been so great that the KKK bombed the station not once but twice!”
Community Interview with Darryl Rodway, URBNET
I was in college studying Civil Engineering in Sudbury and got heavily sidetracked with the campus radio station. This was the first time getting on a pair of Technics 1200s, and I gradually just started spending more time in the studio than studying engineering!
