May MD of the Month | Molly Robins, WRUR Rochester
I could listen to Marika Hackman on repeat for hours–and honestly, I definitely have already. Her music is kind of fascinating and meaningful both sonically and lyrically, so I can appreciate it on so many levels! I wouldn’t dare pick an album–her entire discography is fantastic and diverse.
Interview with Joshua Ellman, Groov Marketing
College Radio will always be relevant, regardless of the choices people have to listen to their favorite music. There’s a connection there. I’m convinced it’s what keeps the ideal of new, creative music alive.
Interview with Terence Praet, Distiller Promo
College and community radio provide unique opportunities to everyone involved. People can share their weird obsession with the world. Rather than hearing the same 40 songs every two hours, as a listener you often don’t know what you’re going to get, and that can be a really fun experience.
Genre DJ of the Month | Sean Greedy, KBCZ Boulder Creek Community Radio
I have 2 shows, one is on at 8 pm and that has more of a straight up rock/hard rock vibe to it. The Friday night 10 pm show has more of an aggressive/bombastic/in your face focus to it. I’m close to the roots of Bay Area Thrash Metal, so sometimes I’ll use that as a foundation for the Friday night show.
April MD of the Month | Vanessa Canibano, WMXM
As time consuming as it is, I listen to every album WMXM receives in the mail. At the very least, I really want artists—especially locals or lesser known artists—to have a shot at hitting our airwaves. I’m not going to turn anything away without giving it a listen first.
Interview with Jordan Young, Tinderbox Music
With how exorbitantly saturated everything is in today’s music, media, and entertainment arenas and how short of attention spans people seem to have, I think there’s a greater need than ever for gatekeepers to serve as arbiters of content and curators of taste and culture.
March Genre MD of the Month: Melo Grant, WRUV 90.1 Burlington
I started at a time when commercial stations didn’t play any rap music at all even when it was blowing up nationally and there was no internet. It’s great to know that people listen to the show and find it both inspirational and educational.
March MDs of the Month: Tori Benes and Stan Standridge of WUOG Athens
For the past year we’ve made an effort to set up in-studios and interviews. We’ve had in a lot of artists I deeply care about, like Palehound and Ratboys among others, and had interviews with some of my favorite artists like Whitney and Dent May.
Interview with Kari Gaffney, Kari-On Productions
It’s the human factor that makes college and community radio so unique, and its ability to present music that has never or seldom been heard. Its independence of programming is so important for future generations of musicians and listeners alike.
