OCTOBER MD of the Month: Omar Husain, CJLO Montreal
Before I became the music director, there was a guy on air before me who’d play Mark Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis”, Barenaked Ladies’ “If I Had a Million Dollars”, and Van Halen’s “Right Now” – WEEKLY (real current/forward thinking picks there…). I pushed to change the entire music programming mandate for the station as a whole to ensure that we supported new music from non-commercial artists.

It was an idea I had back in 2011 to unite college radio stations and to show the world that rumors of our death were unfounded. In many ways, especially after the recent LPFM boom which saw dozens of new college radio stations launch, college radio is flourishing. Those foolish universities that decide to sell off their stations are literally depriving their students of a voice and an important outlet for expression.

WIPZ gets involved with the community quite a bit. The athletic scene is probably where we have the most impact. We broadcast numerous sporting events in the area. As for other things we do, we recently helped with Bark for Life, which is a local event. It is a noncompetitive walk event for dogs and their owners to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer.

As a lifelong music fan there are albums I’ll never tire of (The Lemonheads’ It’s A Shame About Ray for instance) but three albums from this year that I’ve been hooked on are Easy by The Weeks and Beth Ditto’s new solo album, Fake Sugar. Dan Auerbach’s new solo LP Waiting On A Song is another winner.

“College radio stations offer a platform for people who are genuinely passionate about music to communicate directly with their community about the music they love. Generally speaking, nothing is focus-grouped or groomed for airplay. There aren’t any charts or graphs or numbers that determine the station’s rotation (if there’s even a rotation at all). It’s a direct and sincere relationship between the people at the station and their community. That is an increasingly rare thing.”

“KGNU gets a lot of recognition in this area because of our alternative approach to presenting news and music programming, and a lot of people get to know us through friends and by word of mouth. That said, we are also deeply committed to getting out and participating in community events and festivals so people can get to know us, but also so we can support other community organization and non-profits in the area that align with our mission.”
