Industry Interview with Nicole Rich, in2une Music (AWAL)
“Meeting Justin Bieber at the age of 13 when he was my idol set the bar pretty high! But when I first started working at AWAL, I was invited into meetings for artists I had been fans of since my childhood, or had even discovered and become fans of more recently –– Greyson Chance and Evalyn come to mind. Those moments never get old.”
Industry Interview with Mark Rini, GROOV Marketing
“We’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with so many legendary artists. Over the years I’ve had one on one time with artists like Gregory Porter, Charles Lloyd, Terry Gibbs and the late Gerald Wilson as I drove them around to radio stations for interviews.”
January 2021 MD of the Month | Cecelia Fragakis, Radio DePaul
“I live in a Chicago suburb and there’s always a lot of local band showcases going on monthly. Probably the most notable band has to be New Nights. I’ve seen them three times, and each time the experience is better than last. They are super interactive and have a lively crowd. One time the singer joined in a mosh pit during an instrumental, but they always get close and personal with fans which is nice to see. It’s also nice to hear live instruments and be able to see small details you might not see at a huge concert.”
NACC Industry Interview with Dave Sanford, Distiller Promo
“We’ve used DISCO for digital servicing for quite some time so I feel like we were well positioned to adapt to the problems of getting music to people and I think radio did a great job of embracing digital servicing as we went through that transition. The biggest challenges that we are facing are coordinating details and technology related to remote sessions and interviews and getting new music to stand out when people don’t get to discover and connect with bands by seeing them live.”
December MD of the Month | Arianne Smith-Piquette, CKUA Edmonton
“We have such an amazing team of hosts, most of them are on top of what’s new and coming out. That being said, there is SO MUCH music! We used to have weekly music committee meetings but these days it’s much more informal – sending out new music emails to hosts, and personal recommendations for individual hosts. I find that listening to what hosts are playing helps a lot, then focusing on what they might enjoy with a few surprises.”
Industry Interview with Brandon Day, Tinderbox Music
“I got to help bands like Twenty One Pilots, Ingrid Michaelson and Imagine Dragons launch their first pushes to radio while they were unknowns, but I think one of the biggest highlights of my career was getting to work one of my favorite artists, and specifically albums, of all time…Gregory Alan Isakov’s ‘That Sea, the Gambler.'”
Genre DJ of the Month | Joseph Pszonek, Folk Music Notebook
“Both shows are dedicated to the adventure of discovering new music and new, independent artists. Radio Nowhere is a two hour show on Sunday evenings (eastern) that features singer-songwriters, some folk and blues with an emphasis on artists from The UK, Ireland and parts of Europe. The Train Wreck show basically allows me to “flush the format” and play new music and deep dives, some with more of a rock edge.”
November MD of the Month | Trixie Yoo, WRCU Colgate University
“I have such a deep connection to The Miseducation of Ms. Lauryn Hill. It’s hard to put it into words. There are few albums in my opinion that match the thoughtfulness, care, and intimacy which Lauryn Hill imbues into this project.”
Industry Interview with Tori Benes, Tiger Bomb Promo
“As I write this, we’re just kicking off the campaign for Sufjan Stevens’ The Ascension! Sufjan Stevens is my favorite artist of all time, so it has been a dream come true to be a part of the team to bring this record to radio!”
