Genre Programmer of the Month | Byron Gonzalez, Latin Alt 88.5 Los Angeles
“About 8 years ago, I was hit by a drunk driver while riding my bike. I woke up in the hospital, without any knowledge of what had happened…After dealing with what might have possibly be the end for me, I decided to further my education, take it seriously and get a degree, even if it didn’t land me a job. If it wasn’t for this, I wouldn’t be here at the Latin Alt.”
October MD of the Month | Nivas Vijay, WSND Notre Dame
“I’ve hosted classical, blues, jazz and reggae on WSND. Most people are surprised that I’m a regular reggae host (DJ Shabba Vijay). Love Chronixx and Protoje.”
Industry Interview with Rupam Sofsky, Shine On
“John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees / Damaged Bug / Bent Arcana / Castle Face Records is just an absolute pleasure to work with & represent. He’s brilliant, funny, prolific, a great interview subject, but also just a complete sweetheart. Bringing my mother to an after party & her meeting Jónsi of Sigur Rós after they performed at Kings Theatre…”
Genre DJ of the Month | Bill Peters , WJCU Cleveland (Metal On Metal)
“This is my 38th year hosting my Friday night Metal On Metal radio show. Some people in the industry have told me it’s the longest running heavy metal in the history of radio. I don’t know, I just do it because I like this kind of music so much. It’s always been a labor of love for me.”
September MD of the Month | Nicole Seaward, WSCA Portsmouth
“The knowledge was the key to all the locks and set me on my career path as an advocate for autistic women and a research assistant for a company whose mission is to increase the number of neurodiverse people in the workplace. Nearly 85% of us are unemployed or underemployed and that must change.”
August MD of the Month | Mike Dunn, Radio Asbury
“Upon moving back to the East coast from Los Angeles this past Fall, where I worked with the likes of Coachella, School Night and the digital entertainment industry, I started Radio Asbury immediately. I wanted to channel all of my knowledge, connections and energy into building something significant, through my own vision and begin creating a legacy within the music space.”
Genre DJ of the Month | Wes Flexner, WCRS Columbus
“I’ve written for the Columbus Free Press for seven years. WCRS is the community radio station affiliated with the Free Press and gives hip-hop bboys, punk rockers, techno weirds, and reggae soundsystems a platform in-between left wing information.”
Industry Interview with Devyn McHugh, Planetary Group
“Working with Planetary has allowed me to see so many shows and work with a ton of really great new records, from some of my favorite artists. It’s hard to pick just one, but Soccer Mommy’s album release show at Amoeba Records comes to mind.”
Industry Interview with Michelle Feghali, Sub Pop
“In college though, I went to RiotFest in Chicago with a photo pass to the festival. I got drunk and went to the photo pit, in front of the crowd, to take photos of Wu Tang Clan. I was so hyped I stopped taking photos and just starting yelling to them that I loved them and they yelled back and brought me on stage after to hang. They were too cool. I’ll never forget that.”
