MD of the Month:

Mason Vore

WDBM East Lansing

Listen to NACC's MD Takeover on Spotify!

How long have you been involved with WDBM and how did you first hear about the station?

I’ve been involved with WDBM since my freshman year at Michigan State in 2019. I heard about the station when I was looking for student orgs related to music on the MSU website before my first year.

What advice can you offer other MDs regarding the ways you get your DJs to play the new music the station receives from labels and promoters?

Prioritizing what your DJ’s listen to already and incorporating that into your sound if applicable as much as possible.

What part of your job do you love the most?

My favorite part of the job is my meetings with the Music Review Team and hanging out around the station when possible.

What was your favorite album released in the last year? Is there a 2022 release on the horizon you are eagerly awaiting?

My favorite album released in the last year is probably Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You by Big Thief or Glow On by Turnstile. I’m really excited for that Yves Jarvis album that comes out May 13th!

Do you have a favorite artist or album you never get tired of listening to?

My favorite band of all time is Big Thief and there will not be a day in my life where I’m tired of listening to them. At the time of writing this, I’ll be seeing them later tonight!

Which artist/band has put on the best live show you’ve ever seen? Have you attended a live show recently now that tours are happening? If so, how was it seeing live music again?

Car Seat Headrest w/ Naked Giants playing in the band is probably the best set I’ve ever seen. Yep, I’ve been back to see a couple shows as of late. I got to see Tyler the Creator in February and Spirit of the Beehive a couple of weeks ago and they were both fantastic experiences.

Who is an artist or band totally outside the realm of the music you play on WDBM that people might be surprised to know you love?

Bad Bunny fits outside of the realm of our station sound but I think his music is absolutely amazing.

If you had the power to instantly change one thing going on in the world at the moment, what would it be?

I would make everyone go to the opener of a concert and ban them from talking during their set.

What event in your life would you say has shaped you the most as a person?

Honestly my involvement at the Radio Station over the course of college is one of the most impactful experiences I’ve ever had. Another huge moment that catapulted my love for music is playing the entirety of Beatles Rock Band in one day with my brother. Legitimately impacted my love and passion for music very much, haha.

If you could choose, what time period in the past would you most want to travel back to visit and why?

I don’t have too much desire to travel back in time, there is much to appreciate in the present. However, I’d like to go back to 1999 in San Francisco to see Tony Hawk do the 900 in the X-games.

Do you have a favorite restaurant in town (dine-in or take out) that you recommend people try?

My favorite restaurant in the Lansing/East Lansing area is probably Eastside Fish Fry. Birria Tacos from Taqueria El Chaparrito are also divine.

What in your life brings you the most joy?

My family, my friends and partner, and season 2 of Malcolm in the Middle.

Lightning Round:

Do you have any current favorite TV shows you’re enjoying/binging? How about a movie (new or old) that you’ve watched recently that you would recommend?

I’ve been watching the X-Files recently and thoroughly enjoying it. I watched “Everything Everywhere All At Once” recently and would recommend it to everyone. I’d also always recommend “Dead Man” by Jim Jarmusch, too.

Finally, Social Media: Do you enjoy it and find it has enhanced your life or do you think people would be happier without it and that it’s caused more societal harm than good? Light question, right?

I don’t enjoy it that much but I think it’s a societal good overall.
