Andrew Bird flies to #1 with his latest LP, Inside Problems

After a week away, the NACC 200 is flush with new music. Four new albums reach the Top 10 and six leap into the Top 20. The very top of the chart is no exception with several albums duking it out to become the 11th NACC 200 chart-topper of 2022. In the end, it was Andrew Bird (3-1) flying to #1 (see what we did there?), and head-butting a fast-charging Soccer Mommy (18-2), for the top spot (sorry, we’ll stop with that silliness). Inside Problems (Loma Vista/Concord) becomes Bird’s second NACC 200 #1 following My Finest Work Yet, which topped the chart for a week in 2019.

As we just mentioned, four new albums reach the NACC Top 10 this week. Graces Ives rises 22-10, TV Priest scoots 21-9, and the aforementioned Soccer Mommy leaps 18-2. But it’s Automatic that enjoys the biggest climb into the Top 10, soaring 155-8 with Excess (Stones Throw). The Los Angeles trio, who named themselves after a song on The Go-Go’s 1981 debut LP when they formed in 2017, scores the second-biggest climb into the NACC Top 10 this year with their second LP.

London-based quartet Petrol Girls lands the highest debut on the NACC 200 this week. Formed as a duo in 2012, the band, named after a group of 19th-century French revolutionaries, expanded to a four-piece and has released three LPs, including the latest, Baby (Hassle). Their lofty debut at #25 gives us the opportunity to feature them for the very first time in our weekly NACC Chart recap.

New England five-piece Goose scores the NACC 200’s biggest climb this week. Contrary to popular belief, the band is not named after Anthony Edward’s character in Top Gun nor an intense love of waterfowl. The name, rather, grew out of an inside joke within the band. Since 2014 they have released three LPs, an EP, and numerous live albums. Their latest effort, Dripfield (No Coincidence), enjoys the third-biggest climb on the NACC 200 this year, exploding 193-22 on the chart.

Between Mother Mother, Soccer Mommy, Moor Mother, and this week’s most-added artist, Momma, there seems to be an intense love of female parent’s going around lately, and really, why not? Moms rule. The Los Angeles duo of Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten storms NACC this week collecting 65 Top 10 adds and opening as one of the Top 5 debuts of the week at #39 with their third LP, Household Name (Polyvinyl).

French favorites Phoenix climbs to #1 on NACC Singles this week with “Alpha Zulu.” No album has been announced, but the single’s release did herald an upcoming fall US tour that kicks off September 9th in St. Paul and wraps at Austin City Limits in October. NACC 200 chart-toppers Alvvays is back with the first single from their first album in five years. “Pharmacist” teases Blue Rev, due out October 7, and is this week’s most-added single.

This week’s Top 5 overall NACC Adds, the genre chart-toppers, and the week’s most-added genre records are included below. In addition to returns to #1 at NACC Non-Comm and World, there are new #1s at NACC NEXT, NACC Canadian, Heavy, Folk, and Electronic this week.
