Andy Shauf Lands the Thirteenth #1 of the Year

Landing the 13th #1 of the year on the NACC 200 this week is Regina, SK singer/songwriter Andy Shauf. Shauf is no stranger to the chart’s penthouse. He topped the NACC 200 with his band Foxwarren in 2019. Early last year he reached #1 with his sixth solo full-length, The Neon Skyline. With his seventh LP, Wilds (Anti-), rising 3-1 this week, Shauf joins Ty Segall, Gorillaz, and Jeff Tweedy (two solo releases and with Wilco) as the only musicians to top the NACC 200 three times.

Three albums reach the NACC 200 Top 10 this week and all three are making big jumps to reach the top tier. Parquet Courts, who we featured here last week, hops 25-10. La Luz, who we featured here two weeks ago, leaps 41-7. But it’s the Louisville, KY five-piece My Morning Jacket who makes the biggest climb, rising 44-8 with their eponymous LP (ATO). Formed in 1998, My Morning Jacket most recently graced the NACC 200 with their Top 10-peaking 2020 release, The Waterfall II, making My Morning Jacket (their ninth LP) their second NACC Top 10-peaking LP.

The highly anticipated fifth release from Philadelphia sextet, The War On Drugs simultaneously scores this week’s most-added and highest-debuting release. The band was most recently on the NACC 200 in 2017 when they spent two weeks at #1 with their fourth LP, A Deeper Understanding. Their new LP collects 66 Top 10 Adds this week and makes two spectacular debuts at #1 on both the NACC NEXT and NACC Non-Comm Charts. They also leap onto the NACC 200 at #20.

Making the biggest climb into the NACC Top 20 this week is Meg Duffy, who records as Hand Habits. The Amsterdam, NY-born musician now resides in Los Angeles and has provided their talents to fellow NACC Chart artists like Weyes Blood, Flock Of Dimes, and the aforementioned The War On Drugs, among others. Their third solo studio album, Fun House (Saddle Creek) races from 86-15 on the NACC 200 this week.

The week’s biggest climb is further down the chart so we won’t do a full feature here, though kudos go to Minneapolis-based Gowns for landing a rare self-released biggest climb with their debut LP. Instead, let’s talk about the second-highest debut on the NACC 200 this week. It comes from Brooklyn musician, Chris Stewart, who records as Black Marble. His fourth LP, Fast Idol (Sacred Bones), roars onto the NACC 200 this week at #31.

Courtney Barnett returns to #1 on the NACC Singles Chart this week with her single “Writing A List Of Things To Look Forward To.” The song recently became her highest-charting commercial single and comes from her forthcoming third LP, Things Take Time, Take Time, due November 12. Indie radio darlings Spoon returns this week with “The Hardest Cut.” It’s one of the most-added singles of the year landing inside the overall Top 5 NACC Adds this week. It’s the first preview of their upcoming 10th LP, Lucifer On The Sofa, due out February 11.

This week’s Top 5 overall NACC Adds, the genre chart-toppers, and the week’s most-added genre records are included below. There are new chart-toppers this week at NACC NEXT, NACC Non-Comm, NACC Canadian, Latin, R&B/Soul, and Chill, and a return to #1 at Jazz.
