The dominant run at #1 for Australian-duo The Avalanches continues

The dominant run at #1 for Australian-duo The Avalanches continues as they become the first artist ever to spend the first four weeks of a year at #1 on the NACC 200 with their third album, We Will Always Love You (Astralwerks). They also pull off a hat-trick as the album tops all three main NACC Charts this week with their return to #1 at NACC Non-Comm. The three closest rising albums last week from Paul McCartney, Viagra Boys, and Slaughter Beach, Dog all fall back this week.

The next best chance at a new #1 next week now falls to last week’s most-added record, Cooler Returns (Sub Pop), from Toronto quartet, Kiwi Jr. The band’s second LP, one of the Top 10 best-reviewed so far in the young new year, explodes up from 31-2 this week, making it the biggest climber of the four new entries this week. We’ll be showcasing two of the others just below. But Shame (who we featured here last week), also rises 12-6.

Also making an impressive jump into the NACC Top 10 this week is Canadian singer Mike Milosh, who records as Rhye. Started in 2010 as a duo, Robin Hannibal left in 2017. Milosh has continued the Rhye as a music collective where Milosh uses a live band. Rhye’s fourth LP, Home (Loma Vista), leaps 40-9 this week.

Taking both highest debut and most-added honors this week is British singer-songwriter and poet Arlo Parks. After releasing two EPs in 2019, her highly anticipated debut LP, Collapsed In Sunbeams (Transgressive/PIAS), is not only the first album to collect over 100 Top 10 Adds since March of last year, but it also becomes the fifth highest-debuting album ever on the NACC 200, exploding onto the chart at #7.

Ensuring an all non-U.S. showcase of albums this week is British duo Still Corners. Begun in 2007 by Tessa Murray and Greg Hughes, the London-based duo have released five LPs. Their three most recent have come out on their own Wrecking Light Records (after two releases on Sub Pop). Their latest, The Last Exit, jumps aboard the NACC 200 this week at #21, the second highest debut of the week.

Austin, TX-based musician Molly Burch spends a second week at #1 on NACC Singles with “Emotion” featuring Wild Nothing b/w “Needy” (where she covers Ariana Grande). Beloved indie-rock band Teenage Fanclub (who Kurt Cobain called “the best band in the world”) return with their first new music since 2016. “I’m More Inclined” is the first single from their upcoming eleventh LP, Endless Arcade, due April 30.

The NACC Top 5 overall Adds, this week’s genre chart-toppers, and the week’s most-added genre records are included below. In addition to The Avalanches return to #1 at NACC Non-Comm, there are new chart-toppers at Electronic, Blues, Hip Hop, Heavy, Jazz, Chill, and NACC Canadian.
