#1 Beach House | NACC Charts for May 29, 2018

After jumping from 12-1 to reach the top last week, Beach House surprise no one by locking down the top spot for a second week with their seventh LP, 7. The Baltimore duo of Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally will be part of the just-announced Sub Pop 30th Anniversary show on August 11 along with Mudhoney, Shabazz Palaces, Wolf Parade, and Moaning among others. Next week will be an interesting one. Can Beach House hold onto #1 for a third week? They will have plenty of competition including La Luz (3-2), Arctic Monkeys (6-3) and two other artists we are profiling here today: Parquet Courts and Courtney Barnett.

We showcased Rough Trade quartet Parquet Courts last week, when their new album, Wide Awake! was the most-added record of the week. This week their sixth LP wastes no time hurtling into the top 10 with a 35-6 jump. Parquet Courts, in addition to playing Lollapalooza 2018, were just announced as one of the acts playing one of the festival’s official after-shows around Chicago. Their show will be Thursday, August 2nd at Thalia Hall. Parquet Courts are one of two acts reaching the NACC 200’s Top 10 this week. The other has a bit of an odd distinction.

Courtney Barnett scored last week’s highest debut on the chart at #23. But she also collects another honor this week, just not in the order it usually happens. Her album, Tell Me How You Really Feel, is this week’s #1 Most-Added record. We can’t remember an album ever landing most-added honors the week after they scored the highest debut. Those things usually happen in reverse order or on the same week. So, by also rising 23-9 in her add week, don’t be too surprised if Barnett seriously challenges for or takes over the top spot next week with her Mom + Pop release. It’s certainly shaping up to be a real battle!

Leaping 199-30 this week, to land this week’s biggest climb, is Edmonton, Alberta-born Michael Rault. He’s the first Canadian ever to join the Daptone family. He signed with the label’s rock spinoff-label, Wick for his second LP, It’s A New Day Tonight. Wayne Gordon, Daptone producer and head engineer calls Rault “one of those once in a lifetime artists,” continuing, “working with him on this record was a reassurance that pursuing music in my life was the right choice.” Pretty heady praise. But it certainly seems college and community radio agree.

The NACC 200’s highest debut this week comes from Merge Records duo Tracyanne & Danny. Tracyanne Campbell has led Glasgow indie pop band Camera Obscura since 1996. Danny Coughlan is a British singer from Bristol who performs under the name Crybaby. The two met in 2013 after Campbell heard Coughlan’s 2012 Crybaby LP and invited him to open shows for Camera Obscura. There was talk of a collaboration at the time, but the tragic passing of Camera Obscura band member Carey Lander in 2015 put any musical collaboration on hold. Eventually, the two began working together again with the result being their self-titled debut LP which debuts at #47 this week.
