#1 Brittany Howard | The NACC Charts for October 29, 2019

Proving that sometimes slow and steady wins the race, Alabama Shakes lead singer Brittany Howard knocks Angel Olsen out of #1 after being climbed over by Olsen a few weeks ago and lands a solo #1 with her debut LP apart from her band. Jamie (out on ATO Records) rises 3-1 on the NACC 200 this week. It’s 2019’s 22nd chart-topper. The Alabama native dedicated (and named the album) for her sister who died of retinoblastoma as a teen. Howard will look to fend off The New Pornographers (2-2), Big Thief (9-4), and Wilco (8-5) for #1 next week.

No new albums reach the NACC Top 10 this week (though recent #1 Close It Quietly, from Frankie Cosmos, does rebound 11-10). So with that feature unavailable this week we can highlight the two biggest NACC 200 climbers versus just the biggest one. Racing 173-26 is this week’s biggest mover Black Marble. Originally a duo when it formed in 2012, Black Marble basically became a solo project for electronic musician Chris Stewart in 2016 and he’s released two of his three LPs since then, including the new Sacred Bones album, Bigger Than Life.

With Halloween nearly upon us, the second biggest mover on the NACC 200 this week comes from the appropriately spooky-named White Reaper. The 5-piece Louisville, KY band jumps 171-41 on the chart this week with their third LP You Deserve Love. The album marks their major label debut on Elektra after two Polyvinyl releases.

The week’s highest debut is last week’s most-added album: Junior, from Montreal quartet Corridor. They enter the NACC 200 this week at #32 with an album sung entirely in their native French. Handled by Canadian label Bonsound north of the border, the band are new to Sub Pop in the States.

Taking most-added honors is carcinogen enthusiasts and possible inadvertent bed arsonists Cigarettes After Sex. The El Paso, TX quartet are back with their sophomore LP, Cry. Formed by Greg Gonzalez is 2012, the band’s latest effort (as was their 2017 self-titled album) have been put out by Partisan Records. The band gathered 74 Top 10 adds this week and debuted at #65 on the NACC 200.

After four weeks on top of the NACC Singles Chart, Soccer Mommy steps aside and Broken Bells rise to #1 for the second time this year. “Shelter” hit #1 in January and now “Good Luck” rises 3-1 after previously peaking at #2. Montreal quartet TOPS returns with this week’s most added single, “Seven Minutes” b/w “Echo Of Dawn,” their first new music since 2017.
