Cat Power sinks her claws into the #1 spot on the NACC 200 for a second week with her Domino release, Wanderer. After leaping 42-5-1, it seemed a second week on top was almost inevitable. Chan Marshall is currently overseas wrapping up her European tour with dates in Spain and Italy before returning to the US for a string of performances that begin November 17 in Seattle and wrap up just before Christmas, December 20 in Chicago. Cat Power will look to hold down the #1 spot for a third week next week, though the rest of the Top 5 would all like to challenge her for the crown. Low (2-2), Hippo Campus (5-3), Metric (6-4) and Kurt Vile (7-5) all wait in the wings.
Another band who looks very much in line to make a run at the top are this week’s biggest climbers into the Top 10. Ohio outfit Cloud Nothings soar 122-7 with their fifth LP, Last Building Burning. The Carpark Records release wastes no time reaching the Top 10 after scoring last week’s most-added honors. As we mentioned last week, their previous release, Life Without Sound, topped the NACC 200 early last year. If they can reach #1 they’ll be the third overall artist and first ever band to land two #1s on the big chart. Both Ty Segall and Father John Misty have enjoyed multiple NACC 200 chart-toppers. One other album also makes an impressive climb into the NACC Top 10: Look Now from Elvis Costello & The Imposters.
The NACC 200’s overall biggest climb this week is made by a sextet originally from Boone, NC called The Nude Party. And lest you think the band’s name is just for fun, in their earlier, rowdier says, the band did indeed get naked during live shows. The entire band relocated from Boone to Livingston Manor, NY (in the Catskill Mountains about 2 hours west of Woodstock) not too long ago. It affords them the small-town living they were used to but allows them much easier access to NYC. The band signed to New West Records this year and released their debut LP in July, though it’s just now getting a push to radio. The album soars 177-46 on the chart this week.
The week’s highest debut belongs to Swedish trio Peter Bjorn And John. Formed in Stockholm in 1999, the band have released eight LPs, including their latest, Darker Days, out on INGRID, an artist collective and label formed in 2012 by the trio and several other artists, including Lykke Li. Peter Bjorn And John are probably still best known for the 2006 song “Young Folks” (off their third album Writer’s Block) which became an international phenomenon (including in the US and Canada where it became commercial radio hit) and featured something that very few songs ever do: a whistled riff. Darker Days is the lowest highest debut on the NACC 200 since early May opening at #50.
Collecting the most Top 10 Adds this week is Ian Sweet. That may sound like a solo male artist, but it is not. Ian Sweet actually began as a solo project for songwriter Jilian Medford. It grew into a trio with the release of debut album Shapeshifter in 2016. But the project has become a solo one once again with the release of her sophomore project Crush Crusher, out on Sub Pop sister label Hardly Art. Nearly 100 stations have featured the album in their Top 10 Adds this week.
Sharon Van Etten makes it three weeks on top of the NACC Singles this week with “Comeback Kid” (the lead single from her 2019 release, Remind Me Tomorrow). And college/community darlings Beach House have returned with outtakes from their NACC 200 chart-topping 7 release, “Alien” b/w “Lose Your Smile.”
