Courtney Barnett breaks the record for most weeks at #1

Courtney Barnett has made NACC 200 history! Tell Me How You Really Feel has spent seven weeks on top of the chart, making it the longest running #1 ever on the NACC 200! A big congrats to Barnett, her label, Mom + Pop, and Planetary Group for the achievement. You can see what all the hullabaloo is about when Barnett performs on Jimmy Kimmel Live tomorrow night at 11:35pm. Who will be #1 next week? Father John Misty (2-2) & Gorillaz (4-3) seem the most likely successors, but at this point, who knows! Courtney Barnett may never let go of #1.

Breaking up the Top 10 logjam a bit this week is Hannah Van Loon’s project Tanukichan. We featured her debut LP, Sundays, a couple weeks ago when it was the highest debut on the NACC 200. Since then the album has climbed 22-14 and now 14-7. Her Company Records release was co-written and produced by Toro y Moi’s Chaz Bear. Van Loon grew up performing classical music and playing the violin, keys, bass, and guitar, then ended up touring and performing in the San Francisco band Trails And Ways before deciding to make her own music. Aided by Bear, she released her debut EP, Radiolove, in 2016. Joining Tanukichan in the NACC Top 10 this week is Jim James, who rises 12-10 with Uniform Distortion (ATO). He peaked at #17 earlier this year with Tribute To 2.

Leaping aboard the NACC 200 this week at #19 is last week’s most-added record, Living In Symbol, from Astronauts, Etc. Like Tanukichan, Toro y Moi’s Chaz Bear has his hands on this album too. It’s released on his Carpark Imprint, Company, and he co-produced it with Anthony Ferraro, who, in addition to making music as Astronauts, Etc., also tours with Toro y Moi playing keyboards. You can catch Ferraro perform his new music live starting August 14th (and straight on through September) when he tours with The Mattson 2.

The race for this week’s biggest mover could not have been tighter. Not only did two albums climb 100 spots on the NACC 200, but they also climbed back-to-back. The late, great John Coltrane rose 154-54 with his Both Directions At Once: The Lost Album (which has been #1 on the NACC Jazz Chart for the last four weeks). But just besting Coltrane, rising 153-53, is Vicktor Taiwò. Born in Nigeria, his family moved to London when he was 8. Taiwò’s love for music was fostered in church choir and has evolved into a solo career that has produced a long-awaited debut LP, Joy Comes In Spirit (out on Innovative Leisure).

Most-added honors this week go to a band named after something every Kardashian is desperate to avoid: Thin Lips (though you would not be misguided to have guessed the name Flat Butt as well). Thin Lips are a Philadelphia trio made up of siblings Chrissy and Mikey Tashijan and their friend Kyle Pulley. Their sophomore release, Chosen Family, follows their 2016 debut, Riff Hard. Included in the band’s chosen family are Hop Along’s Frances Quinlan and Joe Reinhart, who produced the new Lame-O Records release. After last week’s photo-finish for #1 Add, Thin Lips are able to best their next competitor by nearly two dozen adds this week.

NACC’s Single Chart #1 comes from Metric and their song “Dark Saturday.” No album title has been announced yet (hence their inclusion on NACC Singles), but their 7th LP is expected out in September. Guided By Voices enjoy the most added single this week with their double-sided effort “You Own The Night/Your Cricket Is Rather Unique.” It’s worth noting that both these bands are enjoying this success without the help of a label.

You can find all of this week’s #1 genre releases here. Also included are the most added genre records of the week.
