After Arlo Parks’ unprecedented 12-week run atop the NACC 200, it almost seems novel now that an album would only stay at #1 for just a couple of weeks but this week Flock Of Dimes steps aside after two weeks and Dinosaur Jr. takes over, stepping up 2-1. The Amherst, MA trio formed in 1984 and apart from an eight-year break from 1997-2005, they’ve been together ever since. Their 12th LP, Sweep It Into Space (Jagjaguwar) becomes just the fourth overall chart-topper of 2021.
Two albums reach the NACC 200’s Top 10 this week. Making the biggest move into the top tier is Juliana Hatfield. Her 19th LP, Blood (American Laundromat), is being featured in our Wednesday NACC Chart Recap for a third week in a row after scoring the week’s most-added album two weeks ago and landing the highest debut on the NACC 200 last week. She leaps 23-6 on the chart this week.
The week’s other new Top 10 comes from Annie Clark, who records as St. Vincent. She ties Arlo Parks for the highest debut on the NACC 200 this year, opening at #7. Only three other albums have debuted higher on the chart. The last time was in 2019 when The Black Keys opened at #2, the highest-ever debut on the chart. Daddy’s Home (Loma Vista/Concord) is St. Vincent’s sixth LP and is also this week’s most-added, with 69 Top 10 Adds.
Two bands tie for this week’s biggest climb on the NACC 200: one fairly new and one formed over 30 years ago. Jumping 178-65 on the chart is The Wallflowers. Formed in 1989 by Jakob Dylan (son of Bob Dylan), the band enjoyed huge commercial success in the 90s culminating in their 1996 single, “One Headlight.” The Wallflowers became a solo project for Dylan in 2014 (though he still utilizes a touring band). Exit Wounds (New West) is the seventh LP under The Wallflowers name and his first album since 2012.
The other artist whose music jumps 113 spots on the chart this week is Montreal trio Chances. Their new EP, Connection (Quartier Général), follows their 2018 EP, Traveler. Together singer-songwriters/pianists Chloé Lacasse and Geneviève Toupin, along with drummer Vincent Carré, meld their English, Francophone, and Metis backgrounds to make music together. They climb 183-70 on the NACC 200 this week.
Last week’s most-added single from Modest Mouse becomes this week’s #1 single leaping 15-1 on NACC Singles. “We Are Between” comes from the band’s upcoming seventh LP, The Golden Casket, due June 25. Grabbing most-added honors for singles this week is LA four-piece Winnetka Bowling League. “Barcelona” feat. Sasha Sloan is taken from what will be the band’s fourth EP, coming out later this year.
