The NACC 200’s Top 4 from last week all looked like possible candidates for this week’s #1 spot. And in a show of their strength on the chart, each of them maintain their place in this week’s Top 4, (though all four records shift their positions from last week). In the end, Jay Som surrenders the penthouse position after three weeks, allowing Greta Kline, aka Frankie Cosmos, and her band, to rise 2-1 with her second NACC 200 #1 record in-a-row. Close it Quietly is Frankie Cosmos’ fourth LP overall and second for Sub Pop.
In one of the busiest weeks the NACC Top 10 has seen for new music, fully half the chart turns over this week. Rising into the Top 10 are Girl In Red (11-8), The Babe Rainbow (12-6), Brockhampton (19-10), and Pixies (22-9). But it’s last week’s most-added record from Washington state quartet Chastity Belt that makes the biggest move into the NACC 200’s top tier. Julia Shapiro, Lydia Lund, Anne Truscott, and Gretchen Grimm leap 61-7 with their self-titled Hardly Art release.
Taking both the NACC 200’s highest debut as well as this week’s most-added overall honors is the beloved Canadian band, The New Pornographers. Eight members strong, they formed in 1997, and four of its original members (Carl Newman, Neko Case, Blaine Thurier, and Joe Seiders) remain in the band to this day. Their eighth LP (and second for Concord), In The Morse Code Of Brake Lights, leaps aboard the chart at #28 as well as grabbing 84 Top 10 adds.
The week’s biggest climb on the NACC 200 comes from Olivia Jean Markel, who records simply as Olivia Jean. Originally known as the lead singer of The Black Belles, the all-female rock band Jack White formed in 2009 for his label, Third Man, Olivia Jean has now recorded two solo albums since the band went on hiatus in 2012. Night Owl, her first LP since 2014, climbs 195-63 on the NACC 200 this week.
With The New Pornographers taking two spots on our Wednesday chart recap, we’re able to showcase another one of the NACC 200’s most notable developing records this week. Pixies seemed the most obvious choice with the second biggest climb into the Top 10. One of the more seminal bands in indie rock, Pixies formed in 1986 and have been cited by Thom Yorke, Kurt Cobain, David Bowie, PJ Harvey, and a veritable who’s who of the biggest bands of the 90s through today as an influence on their music. Pixies’ seventh LP, Beneath The Eyrie (out on BMG), climbs 22-9 this week.
Last week’s most-added single from Soccer Mommy, “Lucy,” soars from 8-1 to top this week’s NACC Singles Chart. The week’s most-added single (and the only one to make the NACC Top 30 Adds Chart), is “Good Luck,” the latest release from Broken Bells.
