#1 Girlpool | The NACC Charts for March 5, 2019

Stiff competition for #1 on the NACC 200 continues this week with the Top 3 remaining stationary from last week. The entire Top 3 is filled with #1 records again. Toro Y Moi and Sharon Van Etten don’t seem to be in any rush to leave the upper reaches of the NACC 200 with their former chart-toppers. But it’s Los Angeles duo Girlpool logging a second week at #1 with their Anti- Records release, What Chaos Is Imaginary. That matches the two-week run on top that their 2017 album, Powerplant, enjoyed.

Girlpool’s next-closest competitor for #1 is now Homeshake, who we featured two weeks ago when its fourth studio album, Helium (out on Sinderlyn), was the week’s most-added record. The solo project for Montreal musician Peter Sagar races from 11-4 this week on the NACC 200 and seems to be positioning itself for a run at the top spot. Joining Homeshake in the Top 10 this week with healthy climbs of their own are Panda Bear (12-6) and Jessica Pratt (15-9).

Blazing 189-35 on the latest NACC 200 are Los Angeles quartet Feels. Fronted by Laena Geronimo and Shannon Lay, the band’s sophomore release, Post Earth, is the follow up to their 2016 self-titled debut which was produced by 2018 NACC Artist of the Year, Ty Segall. Their new album is their first on Wichita Records. The band are currently on a European tour but will return to the States in mid-April for a string of US dates.

The NACC 200’s highest debut this week comes from Michael Benjamin Lerner who records as Telekinesis. Lerner hails from Seattle and recorded his first album in 2008 with Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla. His fifth LP, Effluxion, is out now on Merge Records (who have released all his music dating back to his 2009 debut) and enters the chart at #37 this week.

NACC’s most-added album of the week is from another musician who records under a moniker instead of their name. Meg Duffy identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns. Recording as Hand Habits, Duffy first started releasing bedroom demos on Bandcamp in the early 2010s. They placed the Hand Habits project on hold to play guitar in Kevin Morby’s band. Duffy eventually released their solo debut Wildly Idle (Humble Before the Void) in 2017 and now follows that record with the Saddle Creek-released placeholder.

“Harmony Hall” b/w “2021” from Vampire Weekend spend an impressive fifth week in-a-row at #1 on NACC Singles this week extending their record-breaking run at the top of that chart. Legendary Smith’s guitarist Johnny Marr has the most-added single this week with “Armatopia,” a stand-alone song that follows his third solo release, last year’s NACC Top 10-peaking Call The Comet.

You can find the Top 5 of the NACC Adds Chart, and all of this week’s #1 genre releases and most-added genre records below. This week sees Girlpool topping a second NACC Chart (NACC NEXT) as well as new #1s at Jazz, Folk and Blues (another musical legend: Mavis Staples).
