Last week, Girlpool‘s Anti- Records release, What Chaos Is Imaginary, became the longest running #1 of the young year. This week they extend that streak to four weeks and now have the longest run on top of the NACC 200 since Mitski set the all-time record for weeks at #1 back in October with her eight-week run. Girlpool now have their closest competitors for the crown lined up behind them since they reached the top. Julia Jacklin (7-2) and Better Oblivion Community Center (6-3) will fight to score their own #1 albums next week.
Only one new record reaches the NACC Top 10 this week. It comes from longtime indie project Mercury Rev. The band formed in Buffalo, NY as a six-piece in 1989. Two original members (Jonathan Donahue and Grasshopper) remain in the now trio. Mercury Rev’s tenth album, Bobbie Gentry’s The Delta Sweete Revisited (out on Bella Union), climbed 15-10 in the chart this week.
Last week’s most-added record from Los Angeles native Sasami Ashworth (who records simply as Sasami) wastes no time heading toward the top of the NACC 200 this week, racing 120-19 with her debut eponymous Domino release. The former Cherry Glazerr member’s first solo release is this week’s biggest climber on the NACC 200 with its 101-spot jump.
The highest debuting album on the NACC 200 comes from Atlanta-based punk band The Coathangers. Formed in 2006, the trio of Julia Kugel-Montoya (Crook Kid Coathanger), Meredith Franco (Minnie Coathanger), and Stephanie Luke (Rusty Coathanger) race onto the chart at #26 with their sixth LP, The Devil You Know, out of Suicide Squeeze.
The week’s most-added album comes from Japanese quartet Chai. Made up of twin sisters Mana and Kana, along with their high school friends Yuna and Yuki, Chai formed in 2012. The foursome released their debut LP, Pink, in 2017 and have followed that up with their sophomore LP, Punk. The Burger Records release nabbed 87 Top 10 Adds this week.
Leaping 11-1 on the NACC Singles Chart this week is Akron, OH duo The Black Keys. Their first new music in five years (“Lo/Hi”) is also tied as this week’s most-added single with Los Angeles band Wand, whose “Thin Air” is the third preview track from their upcoming Laughing Matter LP, due out April 19.
