Gorillaz scores third #1 on the NACC 200

Gorillaz completes a quick run up the NACC 200 and climb into a tie with Ty Segall as the only artists who have scored three #1s on the NACC 200. The British virtual band (made up of Stuart “2-D” Pot, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs) is actually Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett. Their seventh LP, Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez (Parlophone/Warner) climbs 3-1.

No new albums reach the NACC Top 10 this week (just the seventh time that has happened). But we’re highlighting one album inside the Top 10 and one that is just outside the Top 10. Vancouver musician Helena Deland rises 9-7 on the NACC 200 this week as well as reaching #1 on NACC Canadian with her debut LP, Someone New (Luminelle). It follows five EPs and a four-part series of songs released in 2018.

The late, great Sharon Jones returns with her second posthumous release. The eighth LP from Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings (Daptone) is a covers album that includes Jones’ take on artists as varied as Steve Wonder, Woodie Guthrie, Dusty Springfield, and Janet Jackson. Just Dropped In (The See What Condition My Rendition Is In) rises 21-14 on the NACC 200 this week as well as topping NACC R&B/Soul for a second week.

The NACC 200’s highest debut this week comes from last week’s most-added album from Eels. Fronted by Mark Everett, the only continual member of the band since it formed in 1995, Eels’ thirteenth LP, Earth To Dora (E-Work/PIAS), leaps aboard the chart this week at #25.

Collecting the most Top 10 adds this week is rapper and producer Ian Bavitz, who records as Aesop Rock. Born in New York but now residing in Portland, OR, Bavitz has recorded eight LPs since beginning his musical career in 1996. His latest, Spirit World Field Guide (his third on Rhymesayers) is most added at NACC Hip Hop as well.

The Shins recently returned with their first new music in a couple years. This week “The Great Divide,” a song about the times we are living in, rises 3-1 on NACC Singles. British band Pale Waves is back with the first single from their forthcoming sophomore LP, Who Am I? (due February 21). “Change” is the most-added single of the week.

The NACC Top 5 overall Adds, this week’s genre chart-toppers, and the week’s most-added genre records are included below. In addition to a return to #1 at NACC Blues, there are new chart-toppers at Non-Comm, NACC Canadian, Jazz, Heavy, and Electronic.
