After having the two longest stays at #1 the NACC 200 has ever seen in the second half of 2018, the revolving door at the top of the chart the last few weeks could give you whiplash. Kero Kero Bonito only spent one week in the Top 3 (though it was the spot that mattered most when they jumped 4-1). Cloud Nothings also only spent one week in the Top 3 when they rose 4-1 last week. This week they suffer one of the biggest drops from #1 that we’ve ever seen, stepping back from 1-8. Rising 3-1 this week to give us our third #1 in as many weeks is Dinosaur Jr. lead-singer J Mascis. His seventh solo album, Elastic Days, becomes the 18th #1 album on the NACC 200 this year. Mascis is currently on tour promoting his Sub Pop release with dates that run through December 15th. He’ll try to fend off hard-charging albums from Ty Segall and our two new Top 10 albums this week for a second week on top next week.
Those two new albums jumping deep into the Top 10 this week include the “screaming eagle of soul,” Charles Bradley, who jumped 11-5, as well as the biggest mover into the Top 10, Grapetooth, who race 14-6 with their Polyvinyl release of the same name. We’ve featured the Chicago duo for three weeks now as they landed top add honors two weeks ago and also enjoyed the biggest climb of the week on the NACC 200 last week. Fun seems to be the best word to describe the Grapetooth sound. Pitchfork says “no other band on the planet may be having more fun right now” and Noisey calls them “the last fun band standing.”
The NACC 200’s highest debut this week comes from alternative rock stalwarts Smashing Pumpkins. Formed in 1988, the band has enjoyed great success over the years, selling 30 million albums worldwide and scoring 14 Top 10 alternative rock hits between 1993-2007. At the fore is the indomitable Billy Corgan, the only member of the band that extends from its beginning to now. Though two original members are back in the fold in the current line-up: James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin. Their tenth album, the succinctly titled: Shiny And Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun, debuts at #40 this week and finds the band with a new label home on Napalm Records.
This week marks just the third time this year that we’ve seen the biggest climber on the chart remain in the bottom half of the NACC 200 despite the big jump. Rising from 196-106 is Slow Dakota, the brainchild of Fort Wayne, Indiana native PJ Sauerteig. Slow Dakota has largely flown under the radar, releasing concept albums from his dorm room at Columbia University. Sauerteig graduated in 2015. More music has followed including this new EP, Suite For Voice And Ukulele, which is out now on Fort Wayne-based label Massif Records.
The most-added record this week is a rare self-released #1 add chart-topper. Spud Cannon is an indie-pop band formed by five Vassar College students. The band released their debut LP, Next Time Read The Fine Print, last year, and follow it up with their newly released sophomore effort, Squeeze. All five members are still in school with founding member Jackson Lewis set to graduate in 2019 and the remaining four members in 2020. The band nabs 81 Top 10 adds this week.
Chaz Bundick (aka Toro y Moi) enjoys a third week atop the NACC Singles Chart this week with “Freelance,” taken from his Outer Peace LP, scheduled for release in January. Most-added single honors fall to Sydney, Australia outfit Sticky Fingers. “Loose Ends” is the band’s first new music since they went on indefinite hiatus in 2016. It is a rare overall Top 10-adding single this week as well.
