Japanese Breakfast look for a fifth week at #1

For three weeks now the same records have been locked into the top 3 spots on the NACC 200. Frustrating for the two at #2 (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard) and #3 (Modest Mouse) and wonderful for Japanese Breakfast. Their third LP, Jubilee (Dead Oceans/Secretly Group) is now the second longest-running #1 on the NACC 200 over the last 13 months. The gap between all three records narrows this week so who lands on top next week is anyone’s guess. And to make things even more unpredictable, now Lucy Dacus (5-4) is in the running as well.

Two new albums climb into the NACC Top 10 this week. The first is Sean Bowie, who records as Yves Tumor. After releasing four LPs between 2015-2020, the Miami-born musician and producer has released his first EP. The Asymptotical World (Warp) leaps 63-8 this week, enjoying the biggest climb into the top tier and becoming his second straight NACC Top 10-charting release.

Also reaching the Top 10 this week is Boston-born musician Ella Williams. Williams records under the name Squirrel Flower, a childhood nickname she gave herself. Her third LP, Planet (i), her second for Polyvinyl, rises 12-9 this week. This is the second time we’ve featured Squirrel Flower after she scored the highest debut of the week back in 2020 with her second studio album, I Was Born Swimming.

This week’s highest debut comes from Acid Dad, a Brooklyn-born band started in 2014 by Vaughn Hunt and Kevin Walker. Their sophomore LP, Take It From The Dead (RAS/Greenway), follows their self-titled 2018 debut. This new album jumps aboard the latest NACC 200 chart at #31.

Scoring more Top 10 Adds than anyone else this week is Austin, Texas-based musician Molly Burch. Her fourth LP, Romantic Images, follows a Christmas album in 2019. We last featured her here when her second LP, First Flower, was the highest debut of the week back in 2018. This week she collects 68 Top 10 Adds which portends a lofty debut on the next NACC 200.

“Rae Street,” the first single from Courtney Barnett‘s upcoming third LP, Things Take Time, Take Time (due out in November), spends a second week atop the NACC Singles Chart this week. Canadian band Tops returns with this week’s most-added single, “Party Again,” to help announce a new fall tour that kicks off October 14 in Palm Springs.
