St. Vincent vs. Japanese Breakfast for #1

The NACC 200 crowns a new #1 this week (the 6th chart-topper of 2021). And so far this year, the top of the chart has been dominated by women…and we are so here for it. We’re halfway through the chart year and female solo artists and female-fronted bands have spent 19 of those 24 weeks at #1. This week Japanese Breakfast (fronted by Michelle Launer) becomes part of that domination by rising 2-1 with their third LP, Jubilee (Dead Oceans/Secretly Group). The album also climbs to #1 on the NACC NEXT Chart. They are a heartbeat away from #1 on the NACC Non-Comm Chart as well.

Two new albums reach the NACC Top 10 for the first time this week (former Top 5-peaking Lord Huron also sneaks back up 11-10). Making the biggest move is Montreal native Allison Russell. Along with her husband, she has recorded since 2012 as the duo, Birds Of Chicago. Having resided in Chicago together since 2009, the duo announced earlier this year that they would go on an indefinite hiatus to focus on Russell’s debut LP, Outside Child (Fantasy/Concord). That move seems to have paid dividends as Russell has reached the Top 10 of the NACC 200 for the first time this week, rising 18-7.

Also reaching the Top 10 is Rostam Batmanglij (who goes simply as Rostam). Like Russell, Rostam got his start in a band, co-founding Vampire Weekend in 2006. The Washington DC native left in 2016 to pursue solo projects and produce music. He continues to collaborate with Vampire Weekend and produced two of last years most lauded indie records for HAIM and Clairo. He’s collaborated with such varied artists as Dirty Projectors, Solange, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Hamilton Leithauser of The Walkmen. His second solo release, Changephobia (Matsor Projects/Secretly), leaps 12-5 this week.

Taking both ‘Highest Debut’ and ‘Most-Added’ honors is the ubiquitous King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. Their second release of 2021 (and their third unique chart appearance of the year) is Butterfly 3000, on their own KGLW imprint. The album is the Australian group’s 18th overall LP since they formed in 2010. Begun as a seven-piece band, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard (now a six-piece) still contains only founding members (a rarity these days for a band that has been together for over a decade). The album soars onto the NACC 200 at #18 on the same week they collect 62 Top 10 Adds.

The NACC 200’s biggest mover this week is last week’s most-added album. It’s the debut LP from
Lynchburg, VA duo Vacation Manor. Nathan Towles and Cole Young started the band in 2016 and also have three EPs under their belt. This week their self-titled debut LP (Nettwerk) soars from 162-33 on the NACC 200.

“We Are Between” from Modest Mouse spends a sixth (and thankfully final week for everyone with singles stacked behind them on the NACC Singles Chart) at #1 on the NACC Singles Chart. Their seventh LP, The Golden Casket, comes out Friday. New Jersey duo The Front Bottoms (contrary to understandable assumptions, neither member possesses a bottom on their front), enjoys the most-added new single of the week with “Voodoo Magic.” The new single coincides with the announcement of their 2021 Fall tour following a performance at Lollapalooza in August.

The Top 5 overall NACC Adds, this week’s genre chart-toppers, and the week’s most-added genre records are included below. In addition to a return to #1 on Blues, there are new chart-toppers at R&B/Soul and Electronic this week.
