#1 Jay Som | The NACC Charts for September 17, 2019

Melina Mae Duterte, aka Jay Som, becomes the 10th act of 2019 to land multiple weeks at #1 on the NACC 200 as her third LP, Anak Ko, spends a second week on top. You can catch two current NACC Top 20 artists together on one bill as one of the bands opening for Jay Som on her latest tour was last week’s highest debut on the chart: Boy Scouts. They climb 23-17 this week. Jay Som has a few records that will challenge her for #1 next week. All of whom we’ll talk more about just below.

As we mentioned last week, the juggernaut that is Frankie Cosmos and their third LP, Close It Quietly, gave Jay Som her biggest competition for #1 this week. Their Sub Pop Records release vaulted 157-8 last week (the chart’s biggest climber) and wastes little time lining up for a serious challenge for the top next week moving 8-2 this week.

Three new albums reach the Top 10 this week. One of them is from Chicago band Whitney who jumps 17-10. The other two albums look like they have their sites set on #1. Bon Iver (Grammy winner for Best New Artist in 2012) rises 12-5. And last week’s most-added honoree, Twin Peaks becomes this week’s biggest mover into the Top 10, soaring 80-8 with their fourth LP, Lookout Low, out on Grand Jury Records. The band have just one more live date (tomorrow in Milwaukee) before heading overseas. But they’ll be back starting with a string of US shows starting on Halloween in St. Louis.

Iggy Pop, the legendary ‘Godfather of Punk’ is back. The Stooges frontman, solo artist, record producer, and actor returns with his eighteenth LP, Free. The Loma Vista/Concord release is the highest debut of the week on the NACC 200 at #16, besting two other Top 20-debuting albums from Girl In Red and Bat For Lashes. The Stooges’ album Raw Power along with his solo LP The Idiot (which David Bowie helped write and produce) have been credited as major influences for a host of artists from Sex Pistols, Nirvana, and Red Hot Chili Peppers to Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, and Joy Division. Pop is a member of the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame inducted in 2010 along with his band The Stooges.

With just the third Advance Tracks album ever to score the biggest climb on the NACC 200, another of this week’s spotlights lands on carcinogen enthusiasts Cigarettes After Sex. The El Paso, TX quartet (who formed in 2008) will release its sophomore LP October 25th on Partisan Records. The pre-release version of the album leaps from 199-85 on the NACC 200 this week.

Collecting 89 Top 10 adds this week and handily taking most-added honors is Alexander Giannascoli. From 2010-2017 he recorded six LPs under the name Alex G. In 2017, ahead of his first release for Domino, he changed his stage name to (Sandy) Alex G, a name that confounded quite a few NACC reporters this week! His eighth LP, House Of Sugar, in addition to being most-added, debuts on the NACC 200 at #45.

You can find the Top 20 of the NACC 200, the Top 5 of the NACC Adds Chart, all of this week’s #1 genre releases, and most-added genre records below. There is a new #1 at World, Folk, Hip Hop & Chill as well as returns to the top at Blues.
