Julia Jacklin scores her second straight #1 on the NACC 200

Cutting through the competition like a hot knife through butter, leapfrogging still-on-the-rise albums from Sylvan Esso and The Mountain Goats, and pushing Kiwi Jr. out of the top spot is Sydney, Australia singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin. It’s the second straight #1 album on the NACC 200 for Jacklin following her sophomore release, Crushing, which reached #1 for a week in March of 2019. PRE PLEASURE (Polyvinyl) makes one of the three biggest climbs to #1 this year, rising 7-1.

Like last time, just one new album reaches the NACC Top 10 this week. It comes from last week’s most-added and highest-debuting album When The Wind Forgets Your Name (Sub Pop). It’s the tenth LP from Boise, ID outfit Built To Spill and follows their previous LP into the top tier of the NACC 200, racing 40-5 and immediately putting them into contention for #1, possibly as soon as next week. Julia Jacklin, of course, will have other thoughts.

Enjoying the biggest climb into the NACC Top 20 this week is violinist, singer, and songwriter Brittney Parks, who records as Sudan Archives. Born in Cincinnati, OH, Parks’ stepfather worked at LaFace Records and had Parks and her twin sister Cat form the pop duo N2. Parks felt stifled and soon struck out on her own for LA. Two EPs and two LPs have followed, including her latest studio album, Natural Brown Prom Queen (Stones Throw) which soars 83-11 this week. The album also reached the Top 3 on NACC R&B/Soul and reaches the Top 10 at NACC Hip Hop this week.

Making the biggest climb on the NACC 200 this week is Calgary quartet Preoccupations. Formed in 2012 as Viet Cong, the band, in an effort to keep the focus on their music, wisely changed their name in 2015 after facing backlash for the moniker. Arrangements, released by Flemish Eye in Canada and self-released in the rest of the world, is the band’s fourth LP and first since 2018. The record roars 142-30 this week. The band begins a North American fall tour October 19 in Detroit.

Just like Built To Spill last week, The Beths simultaneously takes most-added honors and land the NACC 200’s biggest debut this week. The Auckland, New Zealand quartet formed in 2014 and have enjoyed great success on the NACC 200. Each one of their three LPs have been featured here with sophomore effort, Jump Rope Gazers, reaching #1 for a week in August of 2020. Their latest, Expert In A Dying Field (Carpark), collects the most Top 10 Adds (91) since Wet Leg’s 117 in April and leaps onto the NACC 200 at #23.

English quartet Arctic Monkeys handily spends a second week at #1 on NACC Singles this week with “There’d Better Be A Mirror Ball,” the first single from the band’s forthcoming seventh LP, The Car (Domino), due October 21. More than doubling the number of adds of the #2 most-added single this week is Reno-formed, LA-based band Surf Curse. “Self Portrait” is the fourth preview single from their upcoming fourth LP, Magic Hour (Atlantic), which comes out October 7.

The current Top 5 overall NACC Adds, the genre chart-toppers, and the week’s most-added genre records are included below. There are new #1s at NACC Non-Comm, NACC NEXT, Blues, and Heavy and a return to #1 at NACC Canadian.
