Liars step up into the top spot with “The Apple Drop”

After two weeks atop the NACC 200, Clairo steps aside and Brooklyn-based trio Liars are more than happy to step up into the top spot, moving 2-1 this week. The band’s rise to #1 took just four weeks with its new LP (its first since 2018), The Apple Drop (Mute). The album is the tenth for lead singer Angus Andrew, who is the only constant member of the band. For the other two members (Cameron Deyell and Laurence Pike) this is their first Liars album. Liars seem to have a bit of a #1 cushion though other bands are waiting in the wings including the next closest competition, Torres, holding at #3 this week.

Making the biggest climb into the NACC Top 10 this week is last week’s most-added artist, Shannon & The Clams. After debuting on the NACC 200 at #119 last week, the Oakland, CA-based quartet’s sixth LP, Year Of The Spider (Easy Eye Sound/Concord), skyrockets to #9. It’s one of just five records to climb from outside the Top 100 into the Top 10 this year.

Also reaching the NACC Top 10 this week is St. Paul, MN five-piece, Hippo Campus. Since forming in 2013 the band has released four LPs and five EPs including their latest, Good Dog, Bad Dream (Grand Jury). We highlighted the band here two weeks ago when they scored the highest debut of the week. This week they rise 14-8. Honorable mention to Lucy Dacus too who rebounds back into the Top 10, up 13-10.

Making the second-biggest move into the Top 20 this week is Vancouver, BC band The Zolas. Made up of core members Zachary Gray and Tom Dobrzanski, the group’s fourth LP, Come Back To Life (Light Organ) is their first release since 2016. Their new album is inspired by 90s Britpop and has built bigger each week over its six weeks on the NACC 200, rising 27-14 this week as well as reaching the Top 5 on the NACC Canadian Chart.

North Carolina native Indigo De Souza released two EPs in 2016 & 2017. An LP followed in 2018, caught the attention of Saddle Creek, and the label re-issued that album in June. Her second LP and first new music since signing on to the label is called Any Shape You Take. It’s this week’s most-added album, collecting 52 Top 10 Adds, and should make a splashy NACC 200 debut next week.

Parquet Courts leaps 13-1 on the NACC Singles Chart this week with “Walking At A Downtown Pace.” It’s the first track and lead single from their upcoming seventh LP, Sympathy For Life, due October 22. Collecting the most adds of the 60 new singles adding this week was Men Without Hats. The Canadian new wave band returns with a re-imagining of their monster 80s hit “The Safety Dance.” “No Friends Of Mine” comes from one of two new albums on the horizon, the first including covers of songs from Lou Reed, David Bowie, and others and the second an album of new material.

This week’s Top 5 overall NACC Adds, the genre chart-toppers, and the week’s most-added genre records are included below. There are new chart-toppers at NACC NEXT, NACC Canadian, Electronic, Heavy, World, and Folk this week.
