#1 Mavis Staples | The NACC Charts for July 9, 2019

NACC is back after a week away and we see some huge debuts and massive movement on the charts. Seven new albums reach the NACC Top 20 this week including three chart debuts. With all that movement we still see the legendary Mavis Staples ruling the NACC 200 with her 14th solo LP, We Get By, out on Anti- Records. Two fun facts about Mavis Staples. One, today is her 80th birthday. Happy birthday, Mavis! And two, Bob Dylan once proposed marriage to Mavis. She said no.Three massive debuts dot the NACC Top 20 this week. The late, great Prince debuts at #16. Mannequin Pussy (who we will profile in a bit) leap aboard the chart at #12, one of the Top 5 highest debuts of the year. But it’s The Black Keys who blows everyone away with the highest debut ever on the NACC 200 at #2! Their highly anticipated Let’s Rock LP is the Akron, OH duo’s ninth LP and first since 2014. The Easy Eye Sound/Nonesuch release just debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200 Chart, their fourth Top 10 debuting album. It’s also the most-added record on NACC’s Top 30 Adds Chart along with debuting outright at #1 on the NACC NEXT and NACC Non-Comm Charts.

Making the week’s biggest climb up the chart is New Jersey quartet Titus Andronicus. Led by Patrick Stickles (the only constant member since their 2005 inception), An Obelisk is the band’s sixth studio album and their third on Merge Records. The album soars 197-41 on the NACC 200 this week.

Two albums climb into the NACC Top 10 this week. The Raconteurs jump 46-6, which normally would be good for the biggest climb into the Top 10. But this week it’s not enough. Australian musician Hatchie (the most-added artist on our last NACC Top 30 Adds), races up 65-4 on the chart with her debut LP, Keepsake, out on Double Double Whammy.

Since The Black Keys take highest debut and most-added honors, we are able to spotlight an additional album. And a Top 5 highest debut of the year at #12 this week feels spotlight-worthy to us. That would be the aforementioned Mannequin Pussy. The Philadelphia punk quartet, who formed in 2010, have just released their Epitaph Records debut (and third LP overall), Patience.

Last week’s most-added single from Spoon, “No Bullets Spent,” jumps 8-1 for their first week at #1 on the NACC Singles Chart. Kalamazoo-based artist Jason Singer, who records as Michigander, has the most-added single of the week with “Poplar.”

You can find the Top 5 of the NACC Adds Chart and all of this week’s #1 genre releases and most-added genre records below. In addition to The Black Keys’ debuts at #1 on NACC NEXT and NACC Non-Comm, there are new #1s this week at World, Hip Hop, Chill and Latin.
