#1 Mitski – Be The Cowboy | The NACC Charts for August 28, 2018

The deadlock of records camping out in the Top 10 of the NACC 200 most of the summer makes the movement there the last two weeks all the more thrilling. Last week, Thin Lips jumped 9-1 and this week we have an even larger climb to the top. In fact, it’s the biggest jump to #1 the NACC 200 has ever seen. With her 33-1 leap, Mitski bests Ty Segall’s 24-1 move in February and her album, Be The Cowboy (out on Dead Oceans), becomes only the fourth record ever to climb from outside the Top 10 to #1 on the NACC 200.

We also have another first: three albums climb from outside the Top 10 into the Top 3 this week. In many weeks, a leap from 20-3 would garner ‘biggest climb into the Top 10’ honors. Since Mitski grabbed that title in her jump to #1, we have an open slot to feature another record, and that aforementioned climb belongs to Death Cab For Cutie. The quintet formed in Bellingham, WA as a solo project for lead singer Ben Gibbard but was fleshed out into a full band with the release of Something About Airplanes in 1998. The band’s ninth LP, Thank You For Today (Atlantic) debuted at #13 on the Billboard 200 this week. The third record in the trio moving from outside the Top 10 into the Top 3 this week comes from Oh Sees (12-2). Also reaching the Top 10 for the first time are The Beths (15-6).

Another first-time achievement on the NACC 200 this week is the highest debut coming from a single. We’ve had two singles bundled together take the title before (LCD Soundsystem) and we’ve had an assortment of advanced tracks from an album do it too (Beck), but never one single song. Kurt Vile’s new track, “Loading Zones,” is his first solo effort in three years and leaps aboard the NACC 200 at #41. All but Vile’s first two solo LPs have been released on Matador (as is this single) and his discography also includes a bevy of EPs, several releases as the lead guitarist for The War On Drugs, and his collaborative album with Courtney Barnett last year.

The NACC 200’s biggest climber this week comes from Boise, ID musician Trevor Powers. Powers performed under the name Youth Lagoon from 2010-2016, releasing three LPs on Fat Possum Records. This new album, Mulberry Violence, is being released under his own name for the first time and on his own label, Baby Halo. Powers wanted a fresh start with no preconceptions or roadblocks in creating new music that, at least for this release, is more experimental than his previous work and more in line with where he is now. The album is off to a solid start, racing 199-59 on the NACC 200 this week.

From one project to another that is basically a one-man band, we have the most-added album this week from Wild Nothing, which is the brainchild of Virginia native, Jack Tatum. While he records his music alone, he is joined by several musicians and performs as a band when touring. Indigo is Wild Nothing’s fourth LP. All four have been released on Captured Tracks. This week the band landed 86 Top 10 Adds to take the most-added crown.

As we mentioned already, Kurt Vile’s single, “Loading Zones,” is the highest debut of the week, but it’s also the highest-placing single on the NACC 200 so far this year which, of course, makes it the #1 Single on NACC Singles as well. The most-added single of the week comes from Soccer Mommy with her cover of the Bruce Springsteen classic, “I’m On Fire.”

You can find the Top 20 of the NACC 200, the Top 5 of the NACC Adds Chart, and all of this week’s #1 genre releases and most-added genre records below. This week there is a new #1 at NACC NEXT & Non-Comm (Death Cab For Cutie taking both charts) and Electronic, as well as a return to #1 at Chill.
