Mitski ties the record for the fastest climb to #1

The unprecedented streak of a new #1 each week to start the year has extended to a record-breaking sixth week. And that is not just to start 2022. We’ve never had six different #1s in six weeks ever on the NACC 200. This week the streak is extended by Japanese-born Mitsuki Miyawaki, who records as Mitski. She has become a real College and Community darling as evidenced by her 8-week run at #1 in 2018 with her Be The Cowboy LP and this week’s massive jump to #1. Not only does she tie the record for the fastest climb to #1 with her 7-1 rise… her sixth LP, Laurel Hell (Dead Oceans) collects more points than any #1 on the NACC 200 has enjoyed dating back to March of 2020.

Two albums make huge climbs into the NACC 200’s Top 10 this week. Animal Collective races 29-3 with their 11th LP and scores their first NACC Top 10 (as their previous LP pre-dates NACC). But it’s Black Country, New Road that makes the biggest climb, bolting 44-8. The English sextet’s second LP, Ants From Up There (Ninja Tune) becomes their first Top 10 in the NACC 200. Their debut album, last year’s For The First Time, was a finalist for the Mercury Prize.

The highly anticipated fifth LP from Brooklyn quartet Big Thief explodes onto the NACC 200 this week as the chart’s highest debut. Primary members Adrianne Lenker and Buck Meek have enjoyed great success on the NACC Charts as solo artists as well with Big Thief. The band most recently reached the NACC Top 10 with both albums they released in 2019. Now their 4AD/Beggars Group release, Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You, opens at #13 on the chart.

London-based quartet Los Bitchos enjoys the biggest climb on the NACC 200 this week, jumping 153-26 with their debut studio album, Let The Festivities Begin! (City Slang). The members hail from around the globe, with multiple ties to Sweden, Australia, Turkey, and Uruguay. Their album was produced by Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand.

The tenth LP from the Austin quartet, Spoon, has already spawned two #1s on the NACC Singles Chart. Lucifer On The Sofa (Matador) follows their 2017 NACC 200 #1 album Hot Thoughts. It’s certainly off to a very promising start in their band’s quest for another chart-topper. Not only is it the week’s most added album, collecting 78 Top 10 Adds, but it also gave Big Thief a run for their money as the week’s highest debut, opening just a few spots behind them at #16 on the NACC 200.

After debuting at #10 on the NACC Singles Chart last week and taking most-added single honors, the new single from Arlo Parks, the artist that bested the aforementioned Black Country, New Road for last year’s Mercury Prize leaps to #1 on NACC Singles this week with “Softly.” New Zealand quartet The Beths returns with their first new music since 2020. “A Real Thing” is this week’s most-added single and coincides with their twice-postponed North American headlining tour.

This week’s top 5 overall NACC Adds, the genre chart-toppers, and the week’s most-added genre records are included below. There are new #1s at NACC Non-Comm, NACC NEXT, Folk, and R&B/Soul as well as a return to #1 on Chill & Latin.
