When Mitski leapt from 33-1 (the biggest climb ever to #1 on the NACC 200) you had to imagine she might be in for a lengthy stay on top. And that imagining has come to fruition. Her Dead Oceans release, Be The Cowboy, has just logged its sixth week at #1. In doing so, Mitski moves into a tie for second place with St. Vincent for the longest stay in the penthouse. Next week she will try to tie Courtney Barnett for the longest run ever on top. Hard to believe the longevity record is already being challenged just two months after that new benchmark was set.
Last week we featured Lillie West (aka Lala Lala) and her The Lamb release as the most-added record of the week. This week she storms onto the NACC 200 at #9! Out on Hardly Art, The Lamb is the only record to debut inside the Top 10 all year and only the third ever to do that on the NACC 200. Last year Alt-J’s Relaxer debuted at #6 and Washed Out’s Mister Mellow opened at #10. Interestingly, neither of those records ever reached #1 so Lala Lala will try to avoid that dubious distinction in the weeks to come.
Richard David James scored the week’s highest overall climb last week with his twelfth Aphex Twin EP, Collapse. This week the Warp Records release enjoys another healthy climb. In fact, it’s the biggest climber into the NACC Top 10, up 25-10. Along with Lala Lala, two more albums make 40% of the Top 10 new this week. Duluth, MN duo and longtime college & community favorites Low, rise 11-6. And previous ‘most-added’ honorees Slothrust hop 15-8.
This week’s biggest climber comes from 14-member Texas-based hip-hop collective Brockhampton. Their fourth LP, iridescence, races from 147-24 this week. The self-proclaimed boy band scored a momentous feat this week, debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200 and selling over 100,000 equivalent album units. With an openly gay front-man, Kevin Abstract, who raps about coming out, gay sex, and same-sex attraction, Brockhampton is a breath of fresh air in a sadly still homophobic genre of music, and their lofty debut as the best-selling album of the week is a real breakthrough.
Taking most-added honors this week is Hippo Campus. The St. Paul, MN-based quintet’s sophomore album, Bambi, nearly collected 100 Top 10 adds. Formed in 2013, the band released a trio of EPs and saw their star rise leading up to their debut LP, Landmark, last year. They’ve played huge festivals on both sides of the Atlantic and NPR named them one of their favorite new artists of 2017. Released on Grand Jury Records, Bambi has already debuted on the NACC 200 this week at #37. With last week’s most-added record being called The Lamb, and this week’s being Bambi, the lesson learned (naturally) is for bands with upcoming releases to re-name their album to some sort of cute four-legged creature. Might we suggest: Little Fawn or My Pudú (look ’em up, they’re adorable!).
After scoring the most-added single two weeks ago, former Vampire Weekend member and producer Rostam rises from his #2 debut last week to become the new #1 at NACC Singles with “In A River.” This week’s most-added single comes from Sydney quartet Erthlings. They began making music together at age 9 (not a typo!) and now at 16 have released their debut single “Bridges.”
