After seeing three records jump from outside the NACC Top 10 into the Top 3 last week, the top of the NACC 200 calms down a bit with all three records holding in place this week. Death Cab For Cutie remain at #3, Oh Sees are #2, and NYC-based Mitski holds down the top spot for a second week with her Dead Oceans release, Be The Cowboy. In doing so, Mitski keeps an absolutely dominating (and welcome) streak of #1s from solo females or female-fronted projects going strong. A full 38 of the last 46 weeks have featured such an album. Next week will offer another chance for the other two albums in the Top 3 to rival Mitski for #1 along with another artist moving into contention this week: Dev Hynes aka Blood Orange soars 50-5 with his fourth LP under the Blood Orange moniker, Negro Swan.
Another album that looks like it could be challenging for #1 soon is this week’s biggest climber into the NACC Top 10. It’s last week’s most-added record from Wild Nothing. Indigo (out on Captured Tracks) races from its debut position of #76 on the NACC 200 last week straight up to #10 this week. Many critics are calling Indigo a return-to-form following a third release where creator James Tatum admitted he was fighting against making the sort of Wild Nothing record people had come to expect. Tatum will begin a fall tour next month starting October 16th in Carrboro, NC. In addition to Wild Nothing and Blood Orange, White Denim also reach the NACC 200 this week, rising 13-8 with their 8th LP, Performance.
Leaping aboard the NACC 200 this week at #21 (to score the week’s highest debut) is English punk rock quintet, IDLES. Their sophomore release, Joy As An Act Of Resistance, has already been met with wild critical acclaim. The Partisan release is currently ranked at #2 on Metacritic’s list of best-reviewed albums of 2018 so far. It’s a long way from the band’s 2011 roots when they met at university in Exeter and lead singer Joe Talbot said of the band at the time: “It took us a long time to get productive because we didn’t know what the fuck we were doing at all, we were fucking terrible for a long time.” Sure seems like those days are in the past.
Enjoying the biggest climb on the NACC 200 this week are Columbus, OH-based folk outfit, Saintseneca. The band, led by Zac Little, formed in 2007 when Little attended Ohio State University. The two other original members are no longer in the band. Their current lineup coalesced in 2013 with they signing to Anti- Records. Pillar On Na is Saintseneca’s fourth LP and third on Anti-. It jumps from #198 all the way up to #40 on the NACC 200 this week.
‘Most-added’ honors this week goes to indie rock darling Sam Beam, better known as Iron & Wine. Beam released his first album on Sub Pop in 2002. A host of releases have followed: 6 LPs, two collaborative albums (with Band Of Horses’ Ben Bridwell and Jesca Hoop), along with a number of EPs including this release, Weed Garden. This is the second time Iron & Wine have had NACC’s most-added record. His Beast Epic LP was most-added just over a year ago in August of 2017.
Kurt Vile has the #1 song on the NACC Singles Chart for a second week with “Loading Zones.” It also improves on its ‘NACC 200’s highest charting single of 2018’ status this week, rising 41-36. Our most-added single (“Carousel”) comes from electronic artist Robert DeRobertis. Formerly known as Saint Pepsi, DeRobertis now records under the name Skylar Spence.
