Modest Mouse scores their first NACC 200 chart-topper with The Golden Casket

After one week on top of the NACC 200 Australian six-piece King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard steps aside allowing Modest Mouse to score their first NACC 200 chart-topper with The Golden Casket (Epic). The band’s eighth LP (their first since 2015) is also the eighth #1 of 2021. This is only the second time this year where there has been a different #1 each of the last three weeks and the first time this year (a year gloriously dominated by female artists) that two all-male acts have been back-to-back at the top of the NACC 200.

Only one new album reaches the NACC Top 10 this week so, by default, it’s the biggest mover into the top tier. It comes from San Diego four-piece Wavves. The 22nd letter of the alphabet enthusiasts formed in 2008 as a musical project for Nathan Williams. Wavves became a duo and then a full-fledged band soon after that. Hideaway (Fat Possum) is the band’s seventh LP and their first to be featured here in the NACC Chart Recap.

Making the biggest climb on the chart this week is Los Lobos. Formed in 1973, three original members remain with another that joined only a year later. The newest member has only been part of the band for a mere 37 years. Far more than just their worldwide #1 cover of “La Bamba” in 1987, the band have recorded 17 LPs over their nearly 50-year career. Their latest, Native Sons (New West) pays homage to the music of fellow LA musicians such as Jackson Browne, The Beach Boys, War, and more. The albums soars 196-49 this week, which is the biggest move on the chart since May.

Samia Finnerty, who records simply as Samia, enjoys the highest debut on the NACC 200 this week with her new EP, Scout (Grand Jury). It follows her 2020 debut LP, The Baby. Although it is the lowest ranking highest debut this year, no one else managed a higher one this week! Fun fact: Samia has a very strong connection to beloved movies like Sister Act and Hocus Pocus as her mom is irrepressible actress Kathy Najimy.

Brooklyn-based trio Liars has returned with their 10th LP, The Apple Drop (Mute). Fronted by Angus Andrews (the only founding and constant member of the band), Liars formed in 2000. This is actually the first time we’ve ever been able to feature them in our recap. Their new album collects 68 Top 10 Adds this week and jumps aboard the NACC 200 at #77.

Kurt Vile takes the #1 spot on the NACC Singles Chart away from Courtney Barnett (who he has collaborated with multiple times…some friend!). His Velvet Underground cover of “Run Run Run,” from the upcoming I’ll Be Your Mirror: A Tribute To The Velvet Underground & Nico (out September 24th) rises 2-1. Taking most-added single honors, and the only single to make the NACC 200 Adds Chart this week, is Blunt Bangs, a new project that includes members of Black Kids, Woods, & The Cadets. “Silence Is Golden” is taken from their debut LP, Proper Smoker, due September 17.
